A hazy, hot and Humid day on the Eastern Shore. Had our three German visitors for a sit down breakfast this morning. We had Fire Dept. sausage, farm fresh eggs (ours), toast and coffee. Most mornings it's toast and coffee for them. Two more days and their three week holiday ends. Today they are off to Ocean City and the beach. Andreas loves to sit on the boardwalk observe the people and eat Thrasher's French Fries. If you like fries, you've got to try Thrasher's. Natalie and her five year old daughter Lena spend most of their time in the sand.
Typing today is a bit of a problem. I smashed my left index finger really good yesterday with a hammer. Nurse Mary says I'll lose the nail.
Today Nurse Mary is over the hump and on the downside of her 5 week, 5 days a week routine at the prison. She's been a real trooper so far and has not been difficult to live with. I don't think she's done a stretch like this since we moved here from CT in 1988.
The Captain received a formal invitation for her and Jeff to the Evening Parade at the Marine Barracks, Washington, DC today. The invitation came from the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Needless to say, Kathy and Jeff are quite excited. Back in 1962 through early 1965 I was stationed at 8'th & I and lowered the Stars and Stripes during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. They will truly enjoy their evening as the guests of General Amos.
Well it's time to do the noon pool check at WYC. I shall sign off for now, wish all a great day and talk to you soon.

Mary Agnes spent a lot of time binding her newest Quilt, and who shall be the recipient of this one? The most recent completion prior to this went to Uncle John in CT to keep him warm this winter. All in all about six hours of dedicated needle and thread time go into binding a quilt. Then of course putting one together initially takes weeks. The more intricate the pattern sometimes brings out frustration, but in the end when she figures it all out and fits the pieces together, she's a happy quilter. In the background a book on tape or NPR radio is usually playing.
On trips to CT M.A. has put the time into doing binding. This was especially true in 2006 when she did a quilt for each grandchild and had to finish up the last one prior to arrival. I remember one trip to CT when she was finishing up a Raggedy Anne or Andy. Each child in the family gets one for their first birthday. Well everything on the doll was finished except the hair. We were in bumper to bumper traffic crossing the GW bridge into NY and I can always remember a trucker looking down trying to figure out what this women was doing. Eventually the doll was held up for the trucker to see and Granny got a thumbs up.
I'd say quilting and exercise are Granny's greatest outlets. She's been seen all over Wicomico and Somerset counties walking. One such walk was a 26 mile trek from Wenona back to Allen. Now Wenona, if you check it out, is at the end of the earth right before you fall into the water. That walk was with her friend Judy, now a retired HS Art teacher living on Catalina Island, CA and working in an Environmental Educational camp.
In May of this year Mary Agnes and our daughter Sarah walked the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, a 39 mile walk in Washington, DC. I got to be their ground support person.
Our other daughter Kathryn was doing her bit on defending us on a Reserve weekend at Dover. This year Kathryn has set the Marine Corps Marathon as her goal and runs an unbelievable amount of miles each week.
Shall post Sam's schedule below. I'm off to the dentist this morning then have two pools to clean and adjust Chemicals for the week. I hope everyone has a great week and I shall talk to you again soon.

The end of Jacks is here!
Looks like the bun in her hair is coming unraveled.
Where have you been Lee? Out in the counting house, counting out the money. I can't believe I've missed two days of posting to the Blog. Please forgive me. I have been running Pop Pop camp for Abby and Tommy. Plus we had our German visitors here on Wednesday with Kathy, Sarah and families for a big Spaghetti Dinner.
Just for fun I try to follow the goings on at USNA & USMA. So, everyone, including me in the past, has given the "Oh so it isn't all that tough at the Air Force Academy."
I find it interesting to note, The Air Force was the first to report for Basic Cadet Training. Day one, 26 June. USMA 30 June. USNA 02 July. Now here is a real kicker, we, M.A. and I know of a mid who has had multiple opportunities to call home. One call was at the one week mark. Parents weekend at Annapolis is 7-10 August and the schedule allows the Mids to have Liberty (Navy Slang for being allowed to leave the base). Leave is the word for Air Force and Army.
Now I have to admit that the Basics at USAFA did have the opportunity to spend 6 hours in a meet and great atmosphere at the homes of their sponsor for the year. Sponsors are available for all the Academies. They were not able to visit with family however. This first parent visit and leave will come on the 30'th of August during Parents Weekend.
USAF begins class' on 7 August, USMA 21 August & USNA 20 August.
I'm now of the mind set that each academy in their own rite offers unique challenges to their first year Basic Cadets, Plebes or Midshipmen as the case may be. I've followed the path of Sam through the Eyes of Web Guy, her letters and numerous forums. We have the future leaders of our military and country going through great challenges, both physical and mental. There are those that could say "it wasn't like that in my day."
Well you know what, I'm glad I'm here today and we have record numbers of our youth trying to gain a slot at all the academies. Thank you all, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Thanks to those at places like The Citadel, VMI and Norwich University in Vermont. And to all our service men and women, thank you.
And sleep well tonight as Kathryn is on active duty through 08-03-08 and John Michael is doing his thing as a PJ in the Air Force for us every day.
Go Navy beat Army. USMC of days gone by!

The first picture with Sam wearing a vest means she is a road guard. For all you non-military types, this is what a road guard does. As a marching or jogging unit approaches an intersection, the road guards double time to the crossing roadway and stop all traffic until the unit is completely through the intersection. When the unit is through the intersection they then double time back to their original position within the ranks. If there are a lot of intersections you can be a bit tired at the end of a long trek.
In picture #2 Sam looks a bit wet and muddy standing in the rear. We're assuming this shot was taken after the obstacle or confidence course. Right after this picture was taken and her flight had finished the course they received perk. One of their Cadre (boss person) tossed them a cell phone and said, "you each have one minute". Fortunately Jeff was at home for the quick call, all is well, attitude great and very tired at the end of the day.

The competition
USMA West Point, NY
USNA Annapolis, MD
I figured it was time to bring out a bit of the rivalry between the participants during the year.
This year on the football field Navy travels to Colorado Springs, Air Force travels to West Point and as usual the Army - Navy game is at a neutral site, Philadelphia, PA. For all but one USAFA game I shall root for the Falcons. When they play Navy, I've got to stick with the Mids. Sorry all you AF types.
On a bit of a family note, I got a call from Rachael today. Apparently she's been driving around since April without a radio in her car. Seems the battery was disconnected at some point and the radio needed to be re-programmed. Ah Ha, no code. Well her Mom while cleaning her office in the past day or two found the code. Over to my house comes Ray (nickname), Pop Pop disconnected and reconnected the battery, Ray enterd the right code and alas, she now has a radio. Oh the heartache of a high school junior without a radio. Now I'm a hero, I love it.
OK, time for dinner, Uno's Farmers market Pizza, you gotta love it.

Commandant's Speech From Monday
Posted July 16th, 2008 8:00pm by WebGuy"Flymom" transcribed the Commandant's Speech from Monday in the forums. I copied it here.
The text is below. Thank you "Flymom"!
“Well good morning everyone and welcome to Jack’s Valley. The dirt and
the path that you walked, as you marched out here today, is the same
path that over 40,000 Air Force Academy Basic Cadets kicked up. The
same dirt trod upon by countless leaders, heroes, and future Air Force
Officers of character. You traveled this road today, no less anxious
about the challenges ahead, no less enthusiastic to test yourself and
overcome each and every challenge. And you will be
challenged. You will be tested physically, and mentally, and your will,
will be tested; on our Combat Arms training, at CATM, in Ops Warrior,
in the Leadership Reaction Course, in our Obstacle Course, in Self Aid
and Buddy Care Course, where you learn to treat our injured; and the
Confidence Course, and in the Assault Course. There will be times when
you will doubt. You will doubt your ability to do any more, to take one
step more. That’s when you have to dig deep, and you have to hear the
voice that motivates you. It could be the voice of your Cadre, it could
be the voice of your classmate, it could be the voice of your wingman,
it could be the voice that only you hear right here. You are as good as
any of those 40,000 men and woman who went before you. If they did it,
you can do it. Class of 2012, (Basics yell in unison, “Never Falter, Never Fail”), remember what you learn and know that you have our faith and confidence that you will succeed. Good Luck.

July 15
I just wanted to add a bit of color other than blue for todays blog. I was beginning to get away from my roots with all this Air Force stuff. Thus, we have the flag of the United States Marine Corps.
The Marine Corps was founded in Tun's Tavern, Philadelpia, PA on November 10, 1775. The Air Force came to fruition on September 18, 1947. I guess my beloved Corps has been around a bit longer.
For whatever reason I've been unable to get on the Academy Assoc web site. Thus no information, schedule etc.
Kathryn is heading off to Chicago for 3 days in the AM. Some kind of a conference on a new research project for her Cardiology group. M.A. and I just got back from the Yacht Club pool with Kathy and Abby. Abby has been in Rodeo Camp again this week and wanted a swim to get the dust off. Fortunately I'm the keeper of the pool and opened it up after hours so she could take a dip.
Ok it's time to watch a little of the All Star game. I'll say good night and check back with the USAFA in the AM. See ya!!!!!!!!!!!!

WebGuy's Course Descriptions and Ratings
Posted July 14th, 2008 5:03pm by WebGuyThroughout 2nd BCT, the Basics will complete a number of "Courses" and activities. I will describe them below. On some courses, they will go through the same course a number of times. This allows them to get introduced to a course, learn it, then attempt to perform on it at max capaciity. (An example is the Obstacle Course)
Assault Course (Official Description)
Mission: The Assault Course will teach hand-to-hand combat skills and rifle fighting techniques while allowing basic cadets to practice these elements in controlled scenarios and pugil-stick competitions. The second-half of the course will require basic cadets to demonstrate these skills by completing the pugil-stick competition and negotiating a course of 18 obstacles/stations and demonstrating hand-to-hand and rifle fighting techniques in a controlled, but mentally and physically challenging environment. The course is designed to assess basic cadets' mental and physical stamina and confidence.
WebGuy Translation
You run around and hit stuff with your rifle. Then, for the pugil-stick competition, you get padded sticks and a helmet and you smack other basics .
WebGuy Rating

CATM (Combat Arms Training and Maintenance)
Mission: The course will train basic cadets on the nomenclature, assembly/disassembly, and safe operation of the Colt M-16A2 rifle. Basic cadets will fire the Air Force Qualification Course (AFQC). If basic cadets earn an expert rating for the M-16 AFQC, they will be authorized the wear of the USAF small arms expert ribbon.

Jacks Valley Day One
Jack's Valley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jack's Valley is a 3,300-acre training complex on the grounds of the United States Air Force Academy used for military field training. Although the area is used year round by various military units and some civilian groups, the primary use of Jack's Valley is during the second half of Basic Cadet Training (BCT) each summer, when the new cadets (or "basic cadets" as they are known during this first summer) train in a field encampment environment. The basic cadets march to and from Jack's Valley, and while they are there, undergo one of the most physically demanding parts of their training at the Academy.
While at Jack's Valley, basic cadets complete several courses to include the Obstacle Course; the Leadership Reaction Course, at which small groups are required to work together to solve problems and cross obstacles; the Confidence Course, with high obstacles and particularly challenging obstacles that are not normally completed for time; and the Assault Course, in which cadets train in close-quarters combat skills. They also take part in small arms training.
The bathrooms in Jack's Valley are legendary for the heritage of comments scrawled on the stall walls by basic cadets from generations past.
Sam got to call home from her host family where she spent 6 hours with four other recruits. Their first request after being asked "what would you most like to do"? They all wanted to go to Walmart and get candy, gum and stuff.
The husband of the host family is former Navy (5 years) and the family moved to CO from the DC area. They have two children, ages 6 & 8.
The attached pictures were forwarded by the host family. From all Sam relayed in her phone call she is doing well and in her element. Getting up isn't a problem for her, however staying awake later in the day is a bit of a challenge. The food is tolerable and she said she's glad she likes chicken. So all in all, Kathy and Jeff were happy and satisfied that Sam is doing well. Now she's off to Jacks Valley and the challenge of military field training. "You go Girl, Beat the Beast"Doolie Day Out
Sam is in the right rear of the marching squad in BDU's and center at field day with hands clasped in front of her. She's the 2'nd in from the rear left in athletic gear marching. The C stands for Cobras.
I wasn't right on my dates or days up at Jack's Valley. The Commandant's site, if your interested, gives some good insight to what's going to happen and when. They return from Jacks on the 26'th.

Saturday night / Phone Call Tmorrow
Well everyone in the Berthiaume household is anxious for tomorrow. The first phase of Beast summer is over. Today was the Field Day competition for all the Basics/Doolies/Beasts. Tomorrow is Doolie Day Out. While at the Academy each Cadet has a sponsor out in the community. On Doolie Day Out the Cadets get to go to their sponsors house from 0900 - 1700 hrs. 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM for you civilian types. So tomorrow, let the phone calls begin. We are all biting at the bit to hear from the horses mouth.
Monday AM the Basics head off on a 5 mile march to Jack's Valley. While at Jacks, Sam will help erect and live in a 10 person tent. The Cadets will be doing weapons training, confidence course and all that good down, dirty and military stuff. This phase of training will last 18 days. For those who make it through Jacks, recognition into the Cadet Wing will take place in early August.
Classes begin August 7.
But for now, here's tomorrow's schedule. Good night all! By the way, the Captain (Kathryn) is on active duty this weekend @ DAFB. Sleep tight, we're safe. Thanks Kathy!!!!!!!!!

Back to Reality
The car ride home, eight hours, started with Thunderstorms and torrential rains in NYC and continued throughout the trip. We had our usually stop at NJTPK exit 5 Cracker Barrel for dinner.
It was good to get into our own house, Bailey, our 6 year old black cat was quite pleased to see us. Ms. Gracie next door had been feeding her on the porch while we were gone. She seemed no worse for the wear from the experience. So much for Pet Palace and $10.00 a day in the future.
When we awoke we observed that our guests, Andreas, Nattalie and 5 year old Lina had arrived from Germany and were out in the annex fast asleep. They awoke and had breakfast, bacon, eggs and water mellon with plenty of coffee, now they are off shopping.
M.A. is off to the store also, burgers on the grill tonight. Will have Jeff, Kathy and Abby over also. Sarah in VA Beach, Tommy and Ray with their father tonight. Tommy and Abby in Rodeo Bible Camp this week.
I'll post Sam's schedule then get some work, feed birds, chickens, weed garden etc. done and chat later. See Ya!!!!!!!!!!

Last night on the Vinyard
The two story house is where we've been staying with Matt, Beth and family. House #2 is on Atlantic Drive in Edgartown and sits on the giant pond. The other shots show the pond and South Beach. The pond fills and empties from the Atlantic. Just the neatest place to be. If you enlarge the picture with the the two pilings, you can see the waves breaking where the pond empties into the Atlantic. We had a great cook out with a co-worker of Matt and his family at this cottage. The cottage has been in their family since the early 50's.
It's been a great four days. We've enjoyed the kids, the two Poodles, Belle & Cody and our time with those we don't see that often. Great restaurants, great shpping and great times.
Tomorrow at 1145 we take the ferry ride back to RI and return to the Eastern Shore. When we get home three visitors from Munich, Germany will be arriving for three weeks. And the beat goes on.
Below is Sam's schedule for tomorrow. Talk to you all soon. Good night from the Vineyard.

070708 The evening.
What a great day, foggy early am, reminded us of Ireland. You can see the mist rolling in with the picture of Matt and Jill on the beach at Chappaquiddick. Mary Agnes and I didn't spend a lot of time on the beach.
We headed off to Edgartown, lunch first off, at the Seafood Shanty. We got seats on the upper deck overlooking Edgartown Harbor. We split a huge order of Calamari with Sweet Salsa dressing. I got a Greek salad and M.A. got a Martha's Vineyard Sushi platter, Salmon, Yellow Fin Tuna and spicy Mayo. We washed it all down with a couple of ice cold beers.
After lunch it was an hour of window shopping in all the quaint stores in the town. Yes we even spent a dollar or two to help the economy. I must add we went into our third Black Dog store, Bill Clinton wold be proud of us. With the flip flop in the economic picture that exists we encountered many Europeans. A lot of English, French and Spanish with a smattering of German and Scandinavian. Most of the work force, much like Ocean City was Eastern European.
After shopping I took M.A. to the Harbor View Hotel. The Harbor View is Edgartown's answer to the Grand Hotel in MI. The first photo is of the hotel. I had stayed here 8 years ago on a trip with the Brady's. Of course we had to have a glass of wine on the porch. It was so gorgeous, with a nice breeze coming off the water to keep you comfortable. M.A. is standing in front of the hotel and across the street with the light house and harbor in the background. By the way, in case you haven't already discovered, just left click on the pictures in the Blog and they automatically enlarge.
Matt Beth and kids returned from the beach around 6:00. We gave them a night off, they're now out on a date for dinner and whatever. We fed the kids, they watched the movie Monster Inc. and now the night is winding down. Two in bed, two to go.
Tomorrow night we've all been invited to a cook out at a co-worker's of Matt. Apparently the home is his in-laws and Matt looked up value on Zillow. The home sits high up on the Atlantic and is valued at 5.5 mil. I'll try and sneak a picture or two. It should be quite an evening's experience.
OK, thats all the news for today, Sam's schedule for tomorrow is below. You all be good now!

Well she looks pretty good for the wear. Was just great seeing a picture of her this morning.
I have no idea what happened with the fonts on my post last night. I tried multiple times to change it, nothing worked. Oh well.
Granny and Kevin out on the porch playing Scrabble. Everyone else is still in bed. Today we're off to Edgartown and Chappaquiddick. Going to do the beach on Chappy. Oops, Jill just appeared.
Did a little shopping yesterday in the Black Dog. Isn't that the place Bill bought Monica a little something?
Was sitting in Nancy's getting ready to order dinner when the cell phone rang (Aunt Meg). She had just returned from Oberlin, OH and the Conservatory of Music.
Meg's son Mark, and my nephew, is quite a trumpet player and Mark had been at Oberlin for a week long music program to enhance his skills. Mark has two sisters, Jackie, who just graduated from the U. of Pennsylvania and Maddie (Madeline) who will be attending George Mason University in the fall. Their Dad is Jim, a product of Oklahoma. The family resides in the DC Burbs in VA. For those who don't know, Meg is my youngest sister.
At some point in time I'll have to give you a breakdown of how my crazy family fits together. For right now, it's breakfast time on the Vineyard. Talk to you later.

Granny, Matt and Jill on Tashmoo Beach, Martha's Vinyard, MA.
Matt & Granny looking for treasure on the beach.Mat regressing and building a sand castle like the ones he used to build in Belfast Maine.
Just a great day with Matt, Beth and the kids. They are so accommodating to us old folks.
Went to Nancy's in Oak Bluffs for dinner, had a Dark & Stormy, Gosling's Black Rum and Ginger Beer with Lemon, visions back to Bermuda in years past.
Had a great day up here at the Vineyard. Went to Tashmoo beach, very remote. Took Jill out for her 7'th birthday and had Pizza for lunch. Matt Granny & I were with the kids this AM doing some crabbing with squid. After an hour the squid really starts to stink. And what did we have for an appetizer for dinner, calamari!!!!!!!!!!!!
