Late in August

Changing of the guard at the Allen Post Office

The Allen, MD post office as it exists today.

Dorothee Taylor the PPIC, that's Postal Person in Charge, hands over the keys to the new PPIC, Maria Dykes (PPIC is a position to save the Government money).  Dorothee has been a part time Postal employee for over 17 years. She will now, after serving her 17 year apprenticeship become a full time employee at another Zip Code. God Bless and safe passage in your career to Post Master General.  Maria, welcome from one of the past named RPIA's. Ask Dorothee.

This is what is known as the chair of honor. Two locals, Bob Kambarn and Lee Bynum can often be found sitting here chit chatting about this and that. As for me, I usually stood, leaning on the addressing counter much like an old cowboy back in the Saloon. Hey, there's a thought. put in a keg for a cold one now and then. The other day I found John Culp sitting there. He never had time to do that prior to his retirement.  Perhaps we will add one member to the RPIA's. Much information is taken in and disseminated from this chair as residents come and retrieve their mail, or conduct general business. Little is said or written about our rural post offices and the part they play in small villages and towns throughout our United States. There is no Barber Shop in Allen but this chair serves the same verbal banter as does the old Barber chair. Many a canine make a daily trek to the Post Office with their masters during the day. It has been a normal sight to see our PPIC down on the floor scratching a canine belly during the day. The hours have been cut for the rural Post Offices. They still serve as a bank for the rural poor, issuing Money Orders and sending the written word for those who still know how to do it.

When our resident Postal Matriarch of 35 years, Mary Lee Kolb retired, we thought the end was at hand for 21810.  Mrs. Kolb was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson, that was when presidents made all Post Master appointments. Mrs. Kolb was also a Notary Public and provided this service to all in the community. She was a Banker, a scribe and translator and a confidant to all. This woman heard all and tattled not, much like the Priest in the confessional, her lips were sealed.  Mary Lee Kolb was a true believer in HIPPA long before it's day.  In addition to playing with the mail, Mrs. Kolb also played the Organ in the Allen Asbury Methodist Church for almost 79 years. The Rooster was fortunate to have our late organist and her son 'Butch" pound the keys on our Steinway years ago, at both our daughter's weddings. When The Rooster and his Hen bought our first house in Allen, 27 years ago, Mrs Kolb was the first person to welcome us to the village and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Mary Lee Kolb is no longer with us here in Allen. I'm sure when the thunder rolls, she's sorting packages and filling Pigeon Holes way high up above. And when the noon songs chime from the church steeple, those who remember, think of Tutu.
If you're in town, mark the following dates on your calendar. Fire Department Chicken Barbecue, Sept. 5 - Lions Poker Run on the River, Sept. 26, Auxiliary Breakfast, Oct. 3 - Church Bazaar and Festival, Oct 17, 9:00 - 2:00, Allen Historical Society Play, Allen in the Civil War - Oct. 25 - Lions Pit Beef Dinner, Nov. 8

Where in the World?

Last weekend on a day off Jeff spent some time fishing. Glad to see he's doing some two handed curls to build up those Core Muscles.

With Kathryn back in the states, the man needed something to cuddle up with. Kathryn, there's something fishy going on here. If all flights are connected with, Jeff should be home when you read this. No sense staying on Waikiki Beach this leg of the journey.

As of this posting, Jeff has made it back to Allen, MD. He is now under a Binky trying to adjust his biological clock.

Mary Agnes, Granny, Ree, Honey or what ever you wish to call her, has this thing about liquid intake. First off, No High Fructose Corn Syrup. Myth or Fact?

She likes bubbly water without flavors. Drinks tap water with natural squeezed Lemon and loves Poland Spring bottled water.

I guess we all have our little quirks about what we drink and don't drink.  Did I mention that on most days Mary Agnes will not turn down a glass of Chardonnay if offered?  Invite her over and try it.

We honor these men for their courage and sacrifice, and our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones. All five warriors were Special Ops veterans.

More Stuff in August

Defcon 2015

My grandson Kevin on right, his friend Nick on left and Defcon founder Jeff Moss @ Defcon15 in Las Vegas, NV last weekend. Kevin and Nick were helping my Son Matt who hawks products and lectures at Defcon each year. Visit Matt's site @: http://serepick.com

Coming up at the end of next month is http://www.derbycon.com in the Blue Grass state of Kentucky.

Beer...

My good friend Amal van Wagenberg is always sending me pertinent stuff through email. I feel this is worth sharing. I heard today on the news that DWI's are down over 5% nationwide since the inception of Uber and Lyft http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/07/10/are-uber-and-lyft-responsible-for-reducing-duis, The next time you fall into the below Phytoestrogens syndrome call Uber @: https://www.uber.com

Now, as if everything else wasn’t bad enough, we find out that beer isn’t good for us?

Beer contains female hormones!

Yes, that's right, FEMALE hormones!

Last month, Yale University scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer.

The theory is that Beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 large drafts of beer within a one (1) hour period.

It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these men

1) Argued - over nothing

2) Refused - to apologize when obviously wrong

3) Gained - weight

4) Talked - excessively without making sense

5) Became - overly emotional

6) Couldn't - drive

7) Failed - to think rationally, and

8) Had - to sit down while urinating

No further testing was considered necessary

Send this to the men you know to warn them about drinking too much beer

(  This theory in no way reflects this writers views towards women. This thought comes from the Liberal Bias of Yale University research. )

Where in the World?

I'm sure if you follow this world traveler on FB, you've seen this already. This is what Jeff says he awakens to in the morning. Granny Elaine and Grandpop Stacy have two more Grand boys on the way between now and Christmas, That will make six of their own and 5 Grands. Stacy you'll have that ranch covered by a lot of cowboys and cowgirls for years to come. "Move em out, move em on, rawhide."

As the family has grown we have become a bit more dollar conscious for the Holidays. We now draw names for the elders in the Palmer, Berthiaume, Davies and Fiddler households. This year Zed in Oklahoma had Mary Agnes in Maryland. Back in May while Zed and family were at a Flea Market down Oklahoma way, he spied this Rooster. "A perfect gift for Granny" says he. Now, how to get it to Maryland? Abby's semester was ending at MSU and Jeff would be going to Oklahoma for a visit prior to picking up Abby. Guess what took a ride north with the Honda Pilot. Sam, Zed and children  came for a visit the end of June.  While Granny was out one day Zed brought the Christmas gift by and placed it in the yard. Upon her return, there was her new found feathered friend. Merry Christmas Granny. We have 100's of bikers pass by our home weekly. Sitting on our porch we hear many comments about the giant rooster in the yard. Granny loves it Zed.

President Obama assigned himself 52 hours of reading on summer vacation

Once when visiting the Vineyard Mary Agnes and I attended an open air band concert at this location. A wonderful get away, thanks Matt and Beth.

The president last week was on Martha's Vineyard vacationing with the family. He has selected an eclectic list of books to read while there. I'm sharing this because I spent a few days on the Vineyard with the Bradys a few years back and would have loved to have had the opportunity to read a bit myself. I was just too busy driving Jim and Sarah about and attending a very political meeting on "Gun Control" to have the opportunity. I'm just so glad Mr. Obama has time to do a bit of reading.

Last week Matt and family were on Cape Cod, MA enjoying a restful time. I would title this photo "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay." That is Cape Cod Bay Matt's looking out on. On the other side of the Bay, Plymouth, Mass where the Witches plied their trade way back when. Otis Redding had a great rendition of that song (Sittin on the Dock of the Bay) back in 1968 which was released on the "Volt" label. The couple lives in Oklahoma City with their daughters Mia and Anna.  Zed's father as well as Zed and his six brothers are also Cowboys. Zed's mother and Sam are Cowgirls. I have no doubt that Mia and Anna will be Cowgirls also. Thus, the boots.)

As a dual military couple with 2.58 kids (I'm 23wks pregnant hence the .58) and important responsibilities with our church, balance is the key to our household functioning.

Last week I left work at 5:30 (yes, another late night), picked up the kids and went straight to church. I had a 6pm meeting with the cub den leaders. As I walked in at 6:05 with the diaper bag, my church bag, a bag of chicken nuggets and fries, two kids, and an iPad while still wearing my uniform, I got a pretty cool question from an 11 year old boy who held the door open. "Mrs. Davies, why are you dressed like a warrior?" "Because I am one," I responded. "Well that's pretty cool. Mr. Davies and you are both warriors."

I went about the meeting with the girls sitting in the back of the room eating their nuggets and fries and watching Elmo (thank you mom/dad for getting us that iPad). By the time the meeting had ended the scouts and their parents had arrived. I work my way to the door, down a bag of nuggets and fries, get rid of a bag of trash, and am met with a foyer full of people. When they see me their conversation instantly dies. "Sam, you're in the military?" "How do you do it?" “Wait, so you work full time in the military, have a husband who also is in the military full time, have 2 kids, you're pregnant, and you're in charge of youth (ages 18mo-11year) Sunday School?" After the last question was asked I try to figure out where to start. “Yes to all the questions and how do I do it...I just do.”

Life is about balance and about staying true to who you are and what your responsibilities are. Yes, my life is unique, but it is no harder than the single mom, or stay at home mom, or a couple who has no kids. Everyone has responsibilities and choices to make. I choose to run from one event to another. I choose to be involved with a lot of different things. How I balance my day is no different than how the stay at home mom of 4 balances her day. There may be different tasks that need to be completed, but all are just as important for that individual.

Before you judge yourself to be lacking against another person's life, think about how other people view you. You are someones hero somewhere, whether you know it or not. You give someone encouragement to keep moving. You allow people to see that it gets better. How you balance your life is an important choice, one that you should always stand behind and don't let others imply you're doing too much or not enough. No one ever sees the full picture of your life, except yourself.

The Week of Cold and Snow for the Northeast

For some unknown reason this post from February 20, 2015 shows up in my Que as never published.  May it be a brain fart on my part or Dementia or a brain freeze, it was February and I was writing about the cold, who knows. It gives those of us looking to cooler weather what not to look forward to. At any rate, enjoy or just ignore if it did get out there previously.

Where In The World is JB?

JB got into Dulles late this past Monday as the snow was starting to come down. He spent the night in DC and drove home on Tuesday blazing trails through the new fallen snow. On Tuesday evening he hosted the entire family at Sobos, a restaurant in Salisbury, MD. The reason for the dinner, Kathryn's Birthday, We had a wonderful evening of fine dining and Jeff's story telling of three weeks in Pakistan. Islamabad and Peshawar with a motor convoy between the two shall not be in my travel itinerary any time soon. Just wait until you hear where the next Port of Call is. Tune in next week for the continued adventures of "JB," only this time with the Mrs. Ooh Rah !

Where In The States Are M.F. and K.F.

The girls arrived back at BWI on time. Snow, Ice and hazardous driving conditions prevailed while leaving OKC. They arrived back in the Bury just as the snow started falling. We all met at Sara's condo on the Frozen Wicomico for a scrumptious Roast Beef dinner. A great time with all, once again listening to stories of Sam and family. One quite interesting story surrounded the Lock Down of Tinker AFB, the evacuation of the Commissary while the girls were shopping. The incident led to the girls being led out of the store as it emptied into the parking lot just as a flight of F-16 were taking off with other aircraft. For 2 hours all the shoppers were sequestered in the parking lot on a gorgeous 80 degree day. Staff brought H2O to the shoppers as Grannie and Great Grannie had fun chasing Mia about the parking lot. Oh the fun of two year olds.

Pics of the girls.

So What's Going With The Weather

I'm sure we all awoke with a what the heck is going on with this weather if your anywhere in the Northeast. The Washington Post pretty well captured all the record lows in the below article.

A Close Shave

My shaving station.

Several editions back I mentioned a Christmas gift from my son Matthew who resides in snow covered Connecticut. I could not help but think back to times long past when I read the section on shaving. "The Art Of Manliness" is a must read for every man who recently honored his favorite lady with a Valentine. For those of you still trying to find that lady,it's even more important to read it. Perhaps you could learn some tricks of the trade, so to speak. Available on Amazon Prime for $12.68.
I do remember the first time I shaved, I was 15 years old and was living in Wildwood Crest, NJ. There was a dance coming up at the local Yacht Club and I had a date. Some hair was growing on my cheeks, not a lot mind you, but hair no less. Off I went with money earned from gathering Conk shells after storms to the closest Pharmacy. No CVS  or Rite Aid back in that day. The stores usually carried the name of the Owner/Pharmacist or perhaps the geographic location.
That first Razor., a double edge Gillette with a pack of Blue blade.

When it came time for the shaving cream the lady behind the counter handed me a can of Burma Shave. For years whenever traveling in a car I loved reading the signs of Burma Shave along the road. They were usually placed some distance apart and you could just anticipate what the next one would be. Yes, you could say I'm a bit nostalgic.

For those us who have been traveling down I-95 to Florida, we could reminisce about Pedro and his "South of the Border" signs. When we traveled south from Connecticut I remember seeing the first sign in Virginia just south of Washington, DC. The kids always wanted to stop and buy the Mexican Jumping Beans.

Getting back to my new razor, I bought a set from the German manufacturer Merkur about a month ago and am quite pleased with my purchase. There are some very expensive single edge razors out there. I pretty much purchased a no frills model. If I continue to like it and don't slit my throat I may step up to a spiffier mode. I also must add that Mary Agnes gives me that cheek to cheek rub, just to check my Art of Manliness. She can tell when I'm lazy and use the Electric Razor, she's not a fan of that means any longer.

Matt and Beth on Valentine Eve. Obviously not a reader on The Art of Manliness.

Cody Fiddler, now he is really in need of a shave, but ready for the Connecticut cold.
It would be four short years after that first shave when I would gain an entirely new perspective on the Art of Manliness. That experience would come at Parris Island, SC, courtesy of the United States Marine Corps. We shaved very close to the skin back in those days. Styptic pencils were commonplace in each Marine's Toilet Kit.
Making sure you knew what a Razor and Shaving Cream were. Those were the days my friends.

Winter North and South

God Bless Mary Agnes and Fred Moore for getting rid of the snow. Every aging man needs a strong women and Farmers for friends when it snows in Back Country, Wicomico County, MD

A walk to the Yacht Club

On Thursday morning with the wind blowing 20 knots and the Thermometer reading 15f I drove partway
to the Wicomico Yacht Club to see for myself what winter had brought on this day. We had another inch of
snow added to the 8" we got on Monday. Yeh, Yeh Yeh, I hear you people up there in New England.
We are south of the "Mason Dixon Line," we do not need this kind of weather. I left New England 26 years ago
to get away from this type of physical and mental abuse. Been there, done that, don't want to do it no more.
