Nice hair Jeff,

Eden/Allen

Mary Agnes and the ladies of the Fire Department Auxiliary have been busy this past week feeding the County Fire Association on Tuesday night and the local farmers at the yearly Lions Club Recognizes Our Farmers night. The Methodist Ladies helped out with the Farmers Night also.

If a person played their cards right and kept a dining out calendar they wouldn't have to cook many meals at home. Between church groups, fire departments and civic organizations, most days offer a meal of one kind or another.

Once the warmth season arrives you can always find a group offering a fish fry or crab feast. Spaghetti dinners seem to be available once a week as a fund raiser for scout troops.
During the cold months there is always an Oyster roast somewhere.

This map, courtesy of "The Weather Channel" shows what we can expect come Tuesday. Really?

We did have a day or two of warm weather this past week. I got to get outside and do a little work on my raised flower bed pictured below. In the raised beds will be some Herbs and Kale. I'll also have 36 sq. ft. tilled space for some Tomatoes, Cukes and Squash.  I'm looking forward to starting some Kale inside later this week.

 THE ROOSTER CROWS in EDEN

Yes, I've changed the name a bit. Should you take the time to research where we actually live you would eventually become quite confused. It has happened to us numerous times. Eden is a rural mailing delivery  address (Zip Code 21822) that encompass' three counties, Wicomico, where we live, Somerset and Worcester counties. The Village of Allen (P.O. Box, Zip code 21810) is actually 3.5 miles to the East and is the first place we lived and had a Bed and Breakfast when we moved here 26 years ago. Our present home sits on a tract of land that many years ago was Trinity. The Trinity church cemetery is across the street from us. Our friends and neighbors, the Przybylas, live in what was the Trinity school across the street from us.  We are also referred to as Lower Trappe. If you check old maps back in the 1700's you'll find us as Lower Trappe.

When we first applied for Passports some years back we were contacted because The State Department said we put the wrong county down. They said we lived in Somerset County. It took a few back and fourths to get that straightened out, So, since we have the garden and the Bees to pollinate we shall be Eden.

If you just search for The Rooster Crows, it will not lead you here, thus the name change. I do not want to tread on someone's moniker.

Spring is Here

While living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, one learns how to identify the coming of Spring and Fall by the arrival of the Osprey.

This morning, 03-09-14 on our way home from church we noticed our first Osprey. It was flying overhead on Cooper Rd. in Eden where the power line cross the Wicomico River. It was directly over the Wojciechowski property. Chuck and Jan Wojciechowski are good friends of ours.
They like us are transplants, they moved here from Cleveland, OH about ten years ago.

Knowing their interest and knowledge of our wildlife we called them immediately to advise of our sighting. As often as the Binoculars are up and being used in their household, we were surprised they had not already noticed this sign of spring. We were the first!

Mary Agnes and I have always used March 12 and September 12 as the arrival and departure dates for the Osprey. Purely a generality on our part.

Punxsutawney Phil, crawl back in your hole, we have the Osprey.

The Red House

We are most fortunate to live where we do, Eden,MD. In our yard, it can truly be a Garden of Eden. One half mile to the East and one half mile to the West, we have two men who are Bee Keepers. They harvest honey and sell it locally. Their names are Scott Moore, and Harry McElhone. They market their product under the name "Red House Honey".

Wired Magazine has a nice, HAPPY, article about Miyan women and Bees. We all need a nice story now and then, if your interested in Bees at all take a minute or to and read the article.

Requiem Aeternam

Eden,MD 03-04-2014

It is with sadness that I must report the loss of one of our Hens from the flock. When checking on the flock mid morning one of the girls was found dead, we presume frozen to death. It was 12 deg. overnight and she was found behind a cinder block under the roosting box. We suspect she was out at lock up time and we just missed her huddled up and out of sight. We have several that are stragglers and often have to Shoo them in. We are now down to 13 hens. I've got to say, "She was such a good Egg". Memorial donations may be made in her memory to PETA.

A sign of the times.

Abby Berthiaume

Congratulations to our granddaughter Abby Berthiume who recieved  an Academic B at the recent Academic Awards night at James M. Bennett High School. We're quite proud of you and the person you've grown to become. Rock and Roll at MSU Abby.

Well my Oregon correspondent must have had a busy week, we haven't received an update on the Davie's family adventures with Mia.

Mississippi Mia Take 2!

New Look

As you can tell we've got a new look here at the Rooster. It was time to change things a bit and to work out some issues surrounding presentation. I hope this is pleasing to the eye for all who read “The Rooster Crows”. We got an update on Mia from Grand mom Elaine in Oregon and I wanted to get this out for those who have Mia interest. The next full issue should be out by the weekend, as usual I’ll email, Facebook and Twit its arrival.

Snow in Maryland

Yesterday afternoon, that would be Sunday, March 2, 2014, I was out on the patio prepping the grill with charcoal to cook a few steaks, the temperature was a balmy 58 deg. It is now 27 hours later. We have had a major snow storm and it is now 19 degrees. Old Man Winter will just not go away.

Mia News from the Oregon Ranch

She is busy with her routine each day, breakfast, morning bath, waterproofing, then put her down.  She checks the upstairs – making sure all pillows are off the spare bed that she can reach, all papers on the computer desk are on the floor and then down stairs she scoots quickly on her stomach to the main floor where she heads to the kitchen (she’s babbling constantly the whole time- and grandma is conversing right back) where she empties the corner cabinet, teases about the garbage- which she doesn’t bother, she just taunts like she’s going to just to get a reaction from grandma and make her giggle.  Then to her toys.  Grandma reads her all her books and then we watch Sesame Street and Clifford- the Big Red Dog.

Soon it’s nap time so Grandma puts her in her car seat and we run to the office, let her out to run in the office while we start some brochure printing.  She is cranky by now and we put her back in car seat and run to the house so she can nap.  Grandma gets laundry done, does some office work upstairs until she wakes, and then she goes through to check if things have been picked up from her morning rounds.  I’m sure you know what happens next….she is so busy and talks the whole time she’s working.  It’s a full time job Mia has and she’s really good at it.

When school’s out, we go pick up Scott or we go to the school where everyone there knows her and calls her by name. She’s “Scott’s Mia” and she loves it all and squeals and runs around giving hugs. She made two trips to Boise- one on Thursday with Uncle Erik as her escort in adventure and one on Saturday with Dallen, Chiara, Jeff, and Scott as escorts.  18 Year-Old Uncle Erik learned that to entertain a toddler for 3 hours, one only needs $6.00 in quarters and a coin operated fire engine.  She only got mad when he didn’t put the quarters in fast enough to keep it running and when he ran out of quarters she wanted to kick the machine for being so picky!  She helped re-organized a toy store in the mall too…her best skill.  She decided that she really likes Uncle Erik because he wears a black cowboy hat like her dad and he shares it with her.

On Saturday, another 200 mile trip to Boise brought a whole new level of fun…5 uncles that dote on Mia!  She squealed with delight with each new introduction and they took turns throwing her in the air and giving her kisses.  She was so excited that she put her arms in the air – high above her head- and ran in circles totally showing off for them.  Both great-grandparents were there as well, watching, smiling, and agreeing that she is probably the cutest one-year old there ever was!It was a very long day for Mia, but she never showed it until in the car seat on the way home- she crashed!

Sunday should have been rest and relaxation/recovery day for her but, alas, there are two teeth on the bottom that are really wanting to be uncovered and she doesn’t like it one bit.  She spent Sunday being held and rocked and reassured that death wasn’t happening that day and that painkillers can be a good thing…not her best day.  We are optimistic that Monday will be better. She is learning different sounds than Blah, blah, blah.  She can whisper “talk talk talk” and now we are working on mamamamama  and dadadadada.   She tries so hard to mimic our sounds.  I fear for all when she gets really good at it. Watch out mom and dad!Elaine

Second week of our visiting Mia is under our belt…she’s settled in…sorta.  This week she proved that one cannot get a normal week’s worth of work done with a one-year old toddler’s help, so we stopped trying and had to “tag-team”.  Early morning Seminary for Grandma at 6:00 is assisted by all.  Stacy stays a few nights a week to give her a morning massage while waiting for grandma to return at 7:30.  Jeff and Scott also take turns staying home on days when Stacy can’t stay with her and give her a quick diaper change at about 7:00 and bring her to Seminary class – which she enjoys the most because she gets 100% of 25 teenager’s attention instantly and she really likes that.  Her self-confidence is astonishing and awesome.  No fear of anyone and total trust.  Wish we all had as much of this as Mia.
