Here is the T shirt contest winner modeling the Grand Prize. Congratulations Della Baird from Wilmington, NC. Thanks to all of you who participated and helped add a little something extra to the hum of the wheels on the highway.
We've been back for two weeks now and Fall is in the air. The nights are cooling off, 53 F this morning and the hurricanes are staying out of the United States, for the moment. Bermuda is starting to get rocked right now, Hunker Down folks, Igor is getting close.
The NFL is in it's second week and already the haves and have knot's are beginning to separate themselves. Within the family we have a key match-up today between Philly and Detroit. Will Detroit continue on it's road of mediocrity or will Philly start a downward spiral in the Post McNabb era. The four games I feel could be the most contested this weekend are:
BAL @ CIN
Paul Brown Stadium 1:00 PM
PIT @ TEN
LP Field 1:00 PM
NE @ NYJ
New Meadowlands Stadium 4:15 PM
NYG @ IND
Lucas Oil Stadium 8:20 PM
For those College Football fans, USAFA played a great game against #7 ranked Oklahoma, loosing 27-24. Delaware beat Duquesne 30-6. Uconn was embarrassed by Temple 30-16.
September 24'th & 25'th is the Eighth Conference on "Women In The Military". One of the representatives from USAFA is Samantha and the Fiddler-Berthiaume family is quite excited to get to see Sam in DC.
Abby gets to perform for the first time at half time this coming Friday for the Bennett Clippers Football team.
Right now Granny is in the kitchen making homemade Beef Veggie soup, I told you fall was in the air. And does it have a savory aroma.
I've really got very little more to say of any worth so I shall not ramble. Have a great week everyone, enjoy life and don't forget:

The Delivery and ending mileage
Here is Sam with the two old men on the delivery of the car. A happy Cadet was she.
So, hopefully your all there sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the final mileage. And the ending mileage is> 2057 I could not get a picture of the Odometer as my camera battery died @ Bents Fort. Your going to just have to trust this honest face and Uncle Bob's Word. The final mileage read 37844, also the trip Odometer read 057 and had gone around twice.
So, we now have a winner and she is> Della Baird of Wilmington, NC who came within thirty miles of the final Odometer reading. She guessed 2027 miles. Congratulations Della, your shirt will be in the mail.
For all who played, thanks for adding a wrinkle to the trip and the blog. Today is pretty much going to be a day of relaxation. Will get Sam at 1400, do something and have dinner. Tomorrow is the Parade and open house. Saturday the Football game with a noon start time. After the game we're off to Denver for the night & then Southwest to DC and a short ride home. Looking forward to a glass of wine on the porch with my lady.
Can't say good night so like an Aussi, Goodday!
Mary Agnes, Don't forget the chickens. Semper Fi everyone, Go Navy beat Army

The pictures. Me at the fort, Uncle Bob at the Bar in the fort, who would have thought? No Coors Lite though. The vast nothingness back to Kansas City. The resident cat in the forts audio room.
Colorado Springs here we are, after four days on the road. Regarding the flat, it was fixed lickity split this morning in about 20 minutes. Sam's Emergency kit, purchased for her by her parents, had a can of instant fix in it. Put that sucker on the stem, put 15 lbs. of air in the empty space and drove to Ace tire. Slam Bam, you all come back now and it was fixed. If you ever get a flat in Lamore Colorado, go to Ace tire. We also vouch for the Holiday Inn Express.
Coming through the back roads to Pueblo we stopped in at Bent's Fort. Run by the National Park Service with staff filling period roles, it is a worthwhile stop if you ever come this way.
Right before Las Animas we ventured off Route 50 on to 194 and that's where we found the fort. Now let me tell you, very little traffic is on 50. On 194 there is NO ONE! Uncle Bobbi says "Leroy, (that's what he's called me for 46 years) next chance you get pull over. Observing a dirt farm road off to the right, I pull off the road 20 yards or so. Now believe me when I say you can see miles of nothing in all directions. Well Bobbi hops out, pulls out the Mickey and begins to relieve himself when what do he see but dust, comin up the road. Just as Mickey is getting tucked away a big Ford F-450 with Fred and Ethel farmer in it, pull up beside us. We exchange pleasantry's, ask for directions back to 50, say good bys, Ethel smiles, and they drive off.
After the fort, the ride into the Springs was uneventful. We pulled into the hotel, a gorgeous LaQuinta, again I'd recommend. We found a Mom & Pop Rib place had a good lunch and went looking for a good car wash. With XXXX miles on the car, there was a lot of dirt. On 50 near La Junta we ran into bright yellow butterflys by the thousands for about 5 or 6 miles. Sam's car now had a yellow nose on it along with all the dirt and bugs.
After the car wash we headed to the Academy and the Uniting of Sam and her car. The look on her face when she saw us and the car was worth the miles and tears came to my eyes. We took off for dinner, Sam wasn't ready to drive and we did some things about the car 101 on the way to dinner. After dinner Sam got behind the wheel and took us on a tour of the Academy. She departed back into the hallowed ground of the Academy at 1900. Until tomorrow Sam, Good Night.
I'm writing this out by the pool. I'm sure Bobbi is asleep by now & I wont be far behind. All of you back East, Hunker Down for the big blow. The milage will be reported tomorrow. If you haven't gotten your mileage in, use the comments section here in the blog or email elfidd@gmail.com.
So, Until tomorrow, good night, it's good to be here.
Night Mary Agnes, Kathy, Matt, Sarah, et all.

Day 4, in the shadows of the Rockies, Lamar, CO
Good evening who ever might be out there. Have to make a correction to day one's Blog, the starting mileage was 35787 from Uncle Bobbie's. I reported 35747, that was when I got gas in 21801. I've made the change, Starting mile were 35787.
At the present we are settled in the Holiday Inn Express in Lamar, CO. Today we went through Hutchinson, Dodge City, Garden City and several others. All our travel today was on route 50. For the sake of those of you who are mileage guessing, our trip yesterday to Emporia, KS was mostly down routes 4 & 75 to 50. Like I mentioned previously, you have until midnight tomorrow to get your totals in.
Today was miles and miles of nothingness, punctuated only by Flatulence on Uncle Bobbies part. We stopped at numerous Historical Markers and became aware of their significance.
I have to go back to yesterday and the Sister Mary Deloris act alike. This woman obviously came from Germany where her father was some type of Storm Trooper. Her Vows were to be nasty, certainly not charitable. The Benedictines, known for their
As we approached the grave of all the Nuns who had passed away, Uncle Bobbies only regret was that we did not stop and pick up black and white paint. The markers, all in a row, if painted, could have been true marching Penguins.
Tomorrows departure will be delayed a bit for the repair of a flat tire in the parking lot. The front desk called a bit ago to make us aware of the fact.
I know this is short, no pics or anything, but the eyes are heavy. I'll say good night until tomorrow from the Springs.
Good night Mary Agnes, Maggie, Bailey and the chickens.
Semper Fi to all, Go Navy beat Army!!!

Day 3, Looking for Dorothy in Kansas
Just got back from having nice Kansas City Beef at "Bruffs", did Texas Toothpicks (Onions and Peppers) for the Appetizer. Had a real nice unfiltered wheat beer from Kansas City. The Beef was a great Rib Eye. Bobby had the KC Sirloin.
After breakfast we headed out towards Atchison, KS. We were off to the Mount and the burial place of Sister Agnes OSB.
The ride turned into a bit of an adventure. We started out in rolling hills with some beautiful fa off vistas. We went through old towns being brought back to life and the usual no traffic roads. As we entered the flat lands again we were following the path of Lewes and Clark, the road we were on for many many miles was in the flood plain of the Missouri River. At one point we exited the main road and went onto a road of Crusher Run that weaved very close to the river. They were replacing a bridge on Rt.4. thus the detour. For 6.5 miles we made a great half circle through one continuous Soy Bean field planted in the Flood Plain. Back in June of this year the Flood Plain experienced quit a bit of flooding. It was a real interesting ride up to Kansas City and on to Atchison.
We got into Atchison at 1300 and found Paolucci's Restaurant, the special was Chicken Pot Pie over biscuits which we both had. It was very rewarding. After lunch we headed up the hill, took a few pictures of the birthplace of Amelia Earhart and the on to Benedictine College.. Took more photos at the school but you'll have to wait, the camera is in the car.
After the school we went to Mt St. Scholastica and got direction's to the cemetery and the burial place of Sister Agnes. The sister was Bobby and Mary Agnes' Aunt. We found the grave, paid our respects and moved on.
It was now time to move on, south and west through Topeka, cattle and grain farms and finally stopping here in Emporia for the night. We're settled in noe, off to Dodge City tomorrow and who knows where we spend the night. I forgot to check the mileage so it's all guess work people. For this lack of detail on my part I'll extend the guessing game another day to Wednesday at 2359 hrs.
Until tomorrow, Good Night Mary Agnes, and you also Maggie.

Day two, the road west.
The river is the Missouri, the Casino is on the Mississippi, everything else is pretty much self explanatory. Will add more as we go.
Until later this afternoon we hadn't seen a cloud in two days. Temps both days have been in the low 90's. We're looking at 93 minimum in Kansas City tomorrow. We're also keeping an eye on whats going on in the Atlantic. We both have boat in the water.
Well it's 1930 hrs., we're in for the night and the total two day mileage is 1067 miles. It was another day with no traffic. Stay off the Interstates people, no traffic or especially Truck traffic on Rt. 50 heading west.
We were going around Cincinnati at 0830, into Kentucky and then Indiana. Just rolling countryside all the way. Tiny little towns, huge farms and Soy Bean, Corn and Sorghum as far as the eye could see. North Vernon, Seymour, Loogootee were some of the towns that we passed through and made a stop in. Loogootee is not far from Crane, which just happens to be the home of the Navy's Surface Warfare Center. Which of our great Senators got that contract won over?
Shortly after noon we crossed into Illinois and scenery did not change. Just more of the same, farm after farm and small towns and no traffic. We ate lunch in Olney, IL under the shade of tree behind a Golden Arch on property owned by the Catholic Church. After lunch we trudged on with St. Louis in our sights.
WE went off the beaten path for a short ride to Carlyle Reservoir. There must have been a hundred boats on the lake. Just a beautiful spot. Glad we made the stop.
About 1630 we were in sight of the Gateway Arch and St Louis. Quite impressive driving into the city. The mighty Mississippi, Edward Jones Dome, floating gambling casino and something we've never seen befor.
We continued west to the Town of Washington, MO where I'm propped up on pillows writing this. We had a nice dinner downtown along the Missouri River, did you know it's the longest river in the US of A?
So now it's time to pack it in for the night. Tomorrow it's off to Atchison and the former home of Sister Agnes OSB. Only 268 miles to our next stop. We just might have some Steak or Ribs in KC also. Who would have THUNK IT?
Good night Mary Agnes!

Day One, On the road
Never thought we'd pull in 41 miles east of Cincinnati after 614 miles. Just finished eating dinner at Butter Bees Sports Bar. Chicken Enchilada for me, Wings for Uncle Bob.
Got off from Lewes, DE at 0755,Milage was 35787 miles, made a quick stop for Coffee and headed west. Di 50 - 97 - 32 - 70 - 68 then back to 50 in Clarksburg, WV. Did 50 - 124 - got screwed up in some construction, drove along the Ohio river for awhile and right through a Power Plant in Chishire, OH. Saw a Tug pushing 6 barges of coal down the Ohio.
We spent several hours riding through Quilt and Amish country and passed by a total of 3 gas stations in 2 1/2 hours. No traffic what so ever, we thought maybe something Nuclear and we were unaware. Was really weird.
Have more pictures on camera in the car and will upload along the way. Right now people, I'm bushed. Don't forget the game, 3 days to get your finish line mileage guess. email or use comments section for blog. Thanks for your guess Cheryl, it's been noted.
Good night Mary Agnes, wherever you are.

One Day to Lift Off
A friend sent me the following obituary, I thought a moment of silence for a former Navy Man was in order. I'm sure Bob would have said, "Go Navy beat Army".
From the Salt Lake City Times
Robert W. Snyder, Jr. 1947 ~ 2010 Bob left us on June 19th after a day of doing what he loved, sailing the BJ at Soldier Creek with good friends and family. Bob was born September 2, 1947, at Mitchel Field AFB, in New York, the only son of Charlotte and Robert Snyder. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he married Connie and they began their life together in Denver. After a few years in Denver, the couple moved to Minneapolis where their son Michael was born in 1970. After a brief stay living in San Francisco they finally made their home in Utah where they raised their son and enjoyed many friends and family. Bob is survived by his wife, Connie, son, Mike (Wendy), granddaughter, Bailey, and sisters, Jean Allstun and Carol (Gary) Davis. Bob lived his life to the fullest and always found a way to have a good time. He had a way of making friends with everyone he met and will be missed by all who knew him. Services will be held Thursday, June 24, 2010 - 11:00 a.m. at Camp Williams, 17111 S. Camp Williams Road (Redwood Rd), Bluffdale, Utah. Family and close friends are welcome from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Bob's humorous outlook on life, please feel free to make contributions to whoever may be running against Obama in 2012.
So, I'm packing the bags and loading the car and tying up loose ends before I travel afar. I must tell you the novel way Uncle Bob and I are recycling T Shirts and drawers. All those needing replacement will be disposed of each day one by one as we head west. It will get rid of the old and make our bags lite for when we get on big bird in Denver for the return trip.
Kathryn has packed us a goody bag with gum, jerky, pretzel bites and mint candies. Gotta love that girl. Jeff's home for a few days and gassed up the car for us. And one more little tid bit from that household, Abby, after a summer of procrastination has finished reading the "Odyssey".
This morning Mary Agnes & I were at a prayer breakfast honoring the Boy Scouts and their 100'th anniversary. We were the guests of Mike Wessels and Met Life. Also at our table was Mom Mom as my grandson calls her and the grandson and scout, Tommy. Tommy recently completed a week at Camp Rodney Scout Reservation in Northeast, MD on the Chesapeake Bay. This past year Tommy and I did a lot of scouting things together, but the camping was not one I chose to share with him. I Like my bed!
The guest speaker at the breakfast was Barry C. Black, Chaplain, United States Senate. Take a moment and read his Biography. He has also written a book, "From the Hood to the Hill" . The man is a true motivational speaker. He had a book signing after the event. I bought a book and you'll never guess how he signed it?
"Semper Fi, Go Navy beat Army"
One other side note, Andy is safely back in Bavaria and united with his new Audi.
See you all from the road tomorrow. Don't forget the contest.

Das Boot Sinkt
Standing on the stern of this vessel is my former employer and good friend, Hubertus Rechberg of Eschenloe, Germany.
The photo was taken yesterday inside The boat house at Hubert's farm on Wicomico Creek, MD. If you can notice, the interior is a reflective pool.
The boat is named a Volga. Volga is a small hydrofoil vessel. Around 6,800 boats have been built. Full-load displacement 1.9-2.6 tons, speed 29-33.5 knots, passengers 6, range 97-160 n.m
AT 0900 yesterday the phone rang with a female voice saying, "Lee, the boat has sunk in the boat house. I gathered up our family friend and adopted brother to my daughter Kathy, Andy Linz, from Weilheim, Germany and we met at the farm. God bless Andy, ever the respondant. We borrowed several chains from a local farmer and pulled the boat to the front of the boat house. We then went to a local Crane Co., gotta give him a plug, Houston Crane G.L. the owner fixed us up with two straps to hook on to the 4 mechanical hoists in the ceiling of the boat house. Andy and Hubert, after several hours of hard work were able to hoist the boat and begin the process of draining it.
Once Billy the boat man gets to the farm the situation will be evaluated and perhaps the boat will motor once again. My guess is not this year. We Shall see.
I must tell you this was not the first sinking of Das Boot. No, it's gone down previously. On that occasion the local Fire Brigade as Hubert calls them, responded. To give them credit, The Allen Volunteer Fire Company, aka, Station #15.
I have been affiliated with the farm for fifteen years, and each year when the owner and his family arrive it has always been an adventure. I'm trying to think if it could be a mini series who would play Hubert's part. Our guess is Walter Matthau. At some point down the line I'll embellish on the happenings at Rechberg Farm mthrough the years and try to paint the characters for you.
Andy returned home to Germany this afternoon after sharing himself with all of us for a month. A wonderful young man who my family has come to love as their own. We are hoping he returns to spend Christmas with us. Andy lost his mother this past March and misses her very much. As an adopted family, we grieve in his loss with him.
Now the process of packing for the trip two days away begins. I must spend a few minutes with our long time friends Bob & Linda Lataille. They stopped by last week on their way south to Wilmington, NC to see one of their daughters and are here again on the return. I'm preparing the charcoal, have basted the Pork Chops and await our daughter Sarah's arrival to begin the cooking process.
So until tomorrow, Semper Fi, Go Navy beat Army!

Who is Brian Lataille ?
Last night about 1930 hrs Kathy got a call from Brian. Brian, with great pride and humility let his friend of 35 years share in the news of his winning an Emmy. Brian "You Rock" to quote Kathy.
Brian grew up as a friend and neighbor with us back in Connecticut during the 70's and 80's. Our son Matt and Brian made War Movies in the woods near our homes when they were in their early teens. Matt the War hero wore the fatigues and played the role, Brian, straight out of Hollywood with his ancient video recorder was the cameraman.
.
Brian became active in Manchester Connecticut's Little Theatre and other production venues during high school and after graduation.
From the Movie promo of "Easy Rider" "The Ride Back", The following was written.
Brian Lataille - Director of Photography
Brian Lataille grew up in Vernon, Connecticut, and like everyone in the field of movie making, dreamed of one day working in the motion picture business. Brian completed his schooling and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Cinematography and immediately began working in his field of choice. For the next few years Brian worked on many TV features including Monk, Girl Friends, The Game, and The Secret Life of an American Teenager. Modestly selling himself as a jack-of-all-trades, Brian was able to bring a visual acumen to productions that only a handful of operators were able to achieve. Brian was able to give filmmakers with a modest budget, some of the big budget shots that are often lacking in those types of productions. His work includes Ghost Rock, Angel Air, and Lethal, along with a series of national TV ads. His feature films include films like Killing Cupid, Alien Invasion Arizona, Dual: The Lone Drifter, and most recently Easy Rider: The Ride Back. In the field of cinematography Brian admires and respects some of the greats including, Bernie Abramson, Donald A. Morgan, Affonso Beato, Cèsar Charlone, Dean Cundy, Lazlo Kovacs, Vilmos Zsigmond, Jack N. Green, Russell Carpenter, and Tom Stern. Lataille currently resides in Burbank, California and is currently attached to oversee the cinematography on two projects in the fall of 2009.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) today awarded the 2009-2010 Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards for programs and individual achievements at the 62nd Emmy Awards presentation at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. HBO's epic $100 million-plus miniseries The Pacific earned the most Emmys at Saturday's technical category ceremony for its casting, sound mixing, sound editing, makeup, art direction and visual effects. Four days to departure
This is the patch for Sam's Squadron, Squadron 29 at USAFA. There are 40 Squadrons in all at the Academy. Patches, Ranks etc. can be found at. Now if your really interested in this kind of stuff you can triple your pleasure by researching the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy. Just always remember one thing " Go Navy beat Army"
Just so I'm not looked at as being prejudiced towards the larger Academies we also have the United States Coast Guard Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
So, here we have the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine schools. You may think I'm slighting the Best of the Lot, The United States Marine Corps, but I'm not. For you see, they have their own college,Marine Corps University (MCU). So if your going to check out the others, check out them also. Just one more little unknown fact that's out there, Now that you have all the resources for all the Academies there will be a test on the sixth Friday of the month for all who follow this blog.
Now I'm sure there are those of you who are wondering what all this Military, Academy, Squadron stuff has to do with a trip west by two old men to deliver a car. Well, that IS what it's all about. And if you have no love for the Military, our nations youth and why their getting this education, you just don't get it Pilgrim!
My granddaughter a junior at USAFA, along with several thousand juniors at all the other Academies recently made a choice of accepting a seven (7) year obligation to:
I (FULL NAME)
All that signifies my individuality. A personal reference
to no one else, which implies that I accept full responsibility
for my actions.
HAVING BEEN APPOINTED
An historical event signifying the accomplishment of
some requisite evaluation and/or training. An act conferred
by a ruling authority.
A CADET (2Lt/Regular Officer/Permanent Professor . . .)
A position of esteem, respect, privilege, and reward that
carries with it professional responsibility.
IN THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE
A branch of our nation’s military that has a unique role to
play in military operations and defense of American values
and interests.
DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR
An oath to be taken seriously. One to which I offer my
full allegiance.
THAT I WILL
An active call. One that demands my energy, my time,
and if necessary, my life.
SUPPORT AND DEFEND
A directed call. My activity is to be both offensive and
defensive.
THE CONSTITUTION
Not the parchment, but the principles—the ideal of liberty
for all men and women.
OF THE UNITED STATES
It isn’t just anybody’s idea. It is ours! Tried by fire and
found to be genuine, lasting, and valuable.
AGAINST ALL ENEMIES
There is inherent risk involved in my work. It is a call to
arms and a call to sacrifice. The stakes are high. It is life
we are supporting and defending and it is life that it may
cost—-whether supremely or on a moment-by-moment
routine basis.
FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC
No matter the foe we are ready, even if he arises among us.
THAT I WILL BEAR TRUE FAITH AND
ALLEGIANCE TO THE SAME
My complete loyalty—my heart—is tied up in this commitment.
And because of the person she is and what these institutions represent, two Crotchety old men are Proud to take this young lady her newly purchased car and to share our adventure on the road with you.

Five days to go
I started this on 08-22-10 but am finishing it on 08-23-10 thus the date confusion. Happy Monday!
I just finished computing the miles, a close proximity any way. With a diversion north in Kansas from Kansas City to Atchison, I got 1939 miles. I'm sure it will be a few hundred extra with trips to restaurants and side trips here and there. About two thirds of the way to Sacramento it is.
So lets add some gamesmenship (don't know if that's a word or not) to the trip. We shall of course mark down our beginning miles when I pull out of Uncle Bob's driveway in Lewes, DE. When we reach our hotel destination in Colorado Springs, hopefully on 09-02-10, we shall again check the mileage. The hotel is in the south of Colorado Springs on Geyser Drive.
So here's what to do. Between today August 23'rd 2010 and day 4 of the trip (08-31-10)at 2359 hrs., send an email to elfidd@gmail.com with your mileage guess. You will be able to keep track of us each day through my Blog and know where we've been and our route. Hey, maybe you'll even learn a little Geography. Please include your full name and mailing address in the email, include T shirt size also. Even if we don't know you, you can still play, please include a little something of who you are since we're sharing so much of ourselves with everyone out there.
The winning mileage estimate participant will recieve a Squadron 29, Black Panther T shirt from USAFA. Uncle Bob and I shall be the judges for the trip mileage. I shall attempt to get a photo of the Odometer on departure and arrival at our destination.
So, only five days to go until we cast off the lines of the land yacht and head west. Stick with us and follow the exploits of, still thinking of what to call us. Tom Mix & Hopalong Cassidy? Now there's two names from the past. See that, follow the insert links and you'll even learn of Hollywood past and maybe a little history to boot.
What is an Insert Link you ask.
How to insert a link
By Kathy Purdy On October 17, 2007
Problem: You want to turn a certain bit of text into a link to another web page.
Solution: Many blogging and email programs have a button that helps you do this. The button usually has a picture of a globe (world wide web) with a section of chain superimposed on it (chain . . . links–get it?). To use such a button, first open the website you want to link to in another tab of your browser. Then select and copy the web address you want to link to. Next, go to the text you want to turn into a link, and select it. Then click on the make-a-link button. A window will open. It usually already has the http:// part in the form box. Select that and then paste your web address over it. Then click the OK button. Your text should now be a link.
Stick with us out there in Cyber Land, lets have some fun. Talk to you all tomorrow.
Six days and counting
Ok, here it is Sunday, just got back from Sam's old home, beautiful downtown Allen, MD after having Coffee from Abby's new Keurig Coffee Maker. No other way to drink coffee, try it sometime. Personally I'm into the Kona Dark. Kathy, Jeff and Andy (German visitor)were up. Abby had left word she was sleeping in until noon.
Here is the destination for our adventure. This was the view out Sam's dorm room last year.
So you'll know the mode of transportation for Bobby and I, the Saturn Vue is pictured.
Tonight Kathy is hosting a Crab feast for our friends from Bavaria. They are the Rechberg family and for the past 14 years we have been in their employ one way or another taking care of their gorgeous property on Wicomico Creek. Must get some pictures up. For those of you familiar with the property you know the setting.
Hubertus has a company ( Valley Electronics) and is soon to expand the operation to the USA. Hubertus and family are from Eschenloe in Bavaria.
Andy (Andreas Linz), who I referred to as having coffee with, is from Weilheim, Germany and has his own tile business. This is the fourth summer he has spent his holiday with us. for the past few years he has stayed with Mary Agnes and I. This year he is blessed with the hospitality of Kathy and Jeff.
So, a little more info for those of you who are out there. Jeff is back from Pakistan and this afternoon leaves for some schooling in GA, USA.
Nothing more today, shall move the fingers again tomorrow, have a great day all.

Trip Planning
OK out there here we come. It is one week until Robert & William start their Western Adventure. The planning has taken place for the past month and an official get together took place between the participants and their respective spouses yesterday here in Allen.
We are transporting C2C Berthiaume's newly purchased 2006 Saturn Vue out to USAFA in 80841. She got a great deal on a fine vehicle through her Uncle Pete. God bless Uncle Pete as he had to deal with Grandfather, Father, Mother and the Cadet over several weeks and waits to complete the deal. Thanks Uncle Pete for your patience and looking out for Sam who was so far away.
For those of you who don't know, Robert, aka Uncle Bobby is Mary Agnes's brother. And me, aka Uncle Lee am Mary Agnes' husband and Sams maternal grandfather.
So the stage is set, we're off a week from today and heading west on old Rt 50. The sun shall be to our backs as we head west each day and in our eyes as we call it a day. We know not where we will stop, other than Atchison, KS for sure. Bobby's Aunt Peggy, aka Sister Agnes O.S.B. was a long time resident in Atchison @ Mt. St. Scholastica We shall also look at least twice a day for any Drive INN, Diner or Dive that has some great food to sample.
We hope to reach USAFA by Thursday 09-02, catch a Parade on 09-03, a football game on 09-04 and catch a plane back east on 09-05. It has the makings of a great trip for two old men without a Bucket List, but hopefully filling a bucket with a lot of great memories and a few stories to tell along the way.
I'll try to be diligent in my keeping up with the Blog, I hope you all enjoy it. See you soon!

More months pass.
So, my Mother has returned to Florida as of 02-18-10, too damn cold up here in the north.
Spring brought rain to a drought stricken Eastern Shore after a winter of more snow than we had seen in years. Unfortunately the summer has once again dried up the area and once again we are in need of rain.
Everyone's health is well and for that we are thankful.
Rachael graduated from High School in May and will be attending Salisbury University in the fall. Tommy moves on to middle school this fall as he goes into the sixth grade. Sarah still sells food at the beach for US Foods and is doing well as a single parent.
Samantha got home for a brief visit during the summer, you can check her out @ thelongeblueline.blogspot.com Abby will be ninth grader in HS this year. She played softball all summer and will be in band this fall, marching on the football field. Kathy still doing Cardiology research nursing and Air Force Majoring as a Reserve. Jeff is busy flitting around the world for the State Department. AS of this writing he's in route to Karachi, Pakistan.
Matt and family in CT are all fine. The kids grow from Kindergarten to a HS Sophomore. Most recently David, Kevin and Jill were in the play Music Man in Tolland. Matt and Beth are well and make a great tag team as parents.
Mary Agnes made the trip to CT for the play. I remained at home to take Tommy to the north of the bay for a week at Camp Rodney for Boy Scout camp.
In May we got a new batch of 26 baby chickens, all hens. We've given a few away, one went to Chicken Heaven and 19 are left. We should start getting eggs around the first of October. Mary Agnes is still with The State part time and I'm a house husband. Maggie, our standard Poodle, 2 yrs. old this past June is just a delight.
So now everything is pretty much up to date. I do want to mention that Andal Linz, our longtime friend from Germany is here for a month. We call him Andie from Bavaria. At the end of the month Andie, Uncle Bob and are taking a road trip out west. Samantha has purchased a car through Uncle Pete (God Bless him). The three of us shall be driving it out to USAFA with a bucket list of stops on the way. We'll be looking for Diners-Drive Ins and Dives along the way. Going to try and use Rt. 50 most of the way.
I shall hope to post to the Blog each day and give everyone an update on the trip. Should be fun, Stay Tuned. See you all shortly.

A Year (1009) gone by.
I can not believe a year has gone by. What have I been doing? Better yet, why haven't I found time to post to this blog? Questions, questions, questions!
For those of us who knew him, Henry died on 02-25-09. A special little guy who will forever be associated with the Sea Gull Century. Today he soars with the gulls as a special Angel with our little Angel, Andy. Henry and Andy, we love you and miss you.
The AVFD, Ladies Aux. of which I'm a part of as it's Treasurer, held a fund raising project selling Chicken Salad on March 7. The prep work prior at the Lions Hall as always acted as a village social event. Members and non-members of the Auxiliary showed up to help out. The spirit of the Village of Allen is something to behold.
On March 13'th we departed in snow heading south to Pine Island, FL by car. Along the way we did an overnighter in Kingsland, GA, right close to St. Mary's, GA. Our desk person at our Marriott suggested "Lang's Seafood", We went, enjoyed and shall go again. If ever that way and hungry for seafood, try it out.
We arrived at Pine Island and spent a great 5 days with Uncle Bob and Aunt Barb, for those that know them Tommy and Elva were in the area also. We had a great visit, great weather and even had a beer or two together. Who would have THUNK IT?
On the trip home we slid by, Sarasota, saw my mother, did St. Armond's Circle, the Pear in St. Pete and made a 1/2 day stop in Disney after a night in Lakeland. We spent 03/19 with Andy and Rika and on the 20'th headed north, spending the night in Jax, NC. We arrived back home on the 21'st after what we felt was another great trip south with great people.
The remainder of March was spent on the mundane tasks of farm mgmt. A Dr. appointment here, a dentist appointment there and such. See, I told you mundane.
On Saturday April 11, 2009 our grandson Thomas Palmer had his 1'st Communion at St. Peter's Episcopal church. Allen lost one of it's own. Fred Moore SR. passed away after a lengthy illness. Fred will always be remembered driving his antique truck in the 4'th of July parade.
The remainder of April brought out some warm weather and good breezes. O one such blow of the wind we had blocked a screen door open to keep it from banging and went on a short trip to Connecticut to see the others. That's Matt, beth and family for those that don't know. Upon our return the Mrs. had left the doors open and two cats made a visitation, these were of the Feral variety. Well, Mary Agnes had her hands full trying to get them out. They were a hissin, and a runnin up and down the stairs and walls, up and over furniture for a smart long time. Finally Mary Agnes prevailed and they were escorted to the great out doors. It was finally time for these two felines, nicknamed Frick and Frack to be caught and transported to camp. On two successive nights the catch was made and the both became permanent members of Camp Somerset on the other side of the creek.
Late April and early May saw my Arrhythmia irregularities return. I went through a whole bunch of tests and finally on May 6, went in to the hospital for a Cath and Stent procedure. To date all has been well, knock on wood, just did a tap on the desk. The pool at WYC was opened in preparation for the Memorial day opening. Once again I was to be the Pool Chairman, with a lot of volunteer help.
During one of my doctor visits we learned of a Standard Poodle in need of adoption. Her name was Maggie and she would be one year old on June 9'th. We met with Maggie, interviewed her and she accepted our home as hers.
The remainder of May saw Jeff, John and I starting to get the farm back in shape after a cold winter. On June 6 we started working on the Pool and Hydrofoil at the farm.
June 8, 2009 our family headed to Freeland, PA for the funeral of Mary Agnes' Aunt Agnes Maloney. Aunt Agnes will be remembered by all for many different reasons. She was the PA matriarch and each member of the family has their own story to tell. The remainder of June saw maintenance continue at the farm in anticipation of the owners arrival in late July from Germany. This has been a yearly event for the past 13 years.
July 4'th the annual Allen, MD 4'th of July Parade and community picnic took place. If ever in the area on the 4'th, you've got to experience it. July 11'th the pontoon boat went in the water, much to Mary Agnes' delight.
Let me take a moment to tell you about two men who we shall say are, "moving machines". Mid July brought them under our employ for about 5 days. Calvin and Oliver are their names and they drive a 20+ year old pick-em-up truck and will move, remove, or take to the dump what ever you have a need to move. They are an entity unto them selves. Over the years much has been accumulated on the farm and it was now time for it to go. Calvin and Oliver made it go!!!!!!!!!!
Andy from Bavaria arrived on the 17'th of July, his third year to vacation in our Annex, ( garage for the commoner). On a beautiful Sunday afternoon on July 19'th Mary Agnes and I took the pontoon boat out on the river for the year's christening cruise. What a great day! The 21'st saw Billy the boat man come by the farm to work on the Rechberg fleet. Once again, no key to the hydrofoil. Now I wont say this is a yearly occurrence, but it does happen quite frequently. Andy in the meantime is scraping away the 2008 barnacles on the Hydrofoil. Do you know a barnacle is a type of arthropod belonging to infraclass Cirripedia in the subphylum Crustacea, and is hence related to crabs and lobsters? I didn't until I looked it up on Wikopedia.
On August 4'th my Aunt Ruth died in Sarasota, FL. My mother, Ruth's sister was a patient in the same nursing home at the time.
On August 7'th Hubertus arrived from Germany. Saturday morning saw the crane arrive to put the Hydrofoil in the water, Hubert supervised, always an experience. That afternoon we would say good by to Andreas, he was to return home to Wilheim. We shall look forward to his return next year.
On September 1'st I had a farewell beer with Hubertus as we would be leaving the next day for Colorado. "Until next year my friend."
On September 2 via Big Bird we departed for Colorado Springs and Parent's weekend at USAFA. This year we rented a large house, sleeps 20+, in Manatou Springs, CO. We had quite a group, Kathy, Jeff, Abby, Uncle Bob, Aunt Barb, Sarah Palmer, Tommy, Mary Agnes and myself and of course our C3C Samantha. What a great time we all had and even saw what represented it's self as a football game, USAFA - 72, Nichol's state - 0. The beer was cold, the food was cooked and all was good!
After my mothers stay (20 days) in the nursing home she and her husband, aka The Professor went to Sterling, Va to be with my sister Meg. The professor didn't stay long and returned to FL to spend time with my sister Robin. Marie ( Mother) remained with Meg. Marie needed some of her things and Uncle Bob and I made a speed trip to FL to retrieve them. We departed Allen, MD @ 0730 on 09/17, arrived Brunswick, GA 1900 hrs, ate, had a beer and slept. Up 0500 on 09/18, coffee and departure for Sarasota, FL @ 0545, arrived Sarasota 1130 hrs. Packed the van and were back heading north by 1430 hrs. We arrived back at the same Hampton Inn in Brunswick as the night prior @ 1930 hrs. We awoke and headed north @ 0615 and arrived back in Allen at 1815 hrs. on 09/19. No moss grew under our butts on this trip.
For the past 6 months my son in-law Jeff has been pursuing a new career with the State Department in the area of Fire protection. On 09/24 he and I took a trip to DC for him to meet his future Boss. He and I made this same trip 10 years earlier when he applied for a similar position. For a host of reasons, after being offered a position at that time, he did not accept the position when offered it. Things were to be different this time. With Sam grown and off to college, Abby older and soon to be in high school, Jeff would take the big step for his and Kathryn's future and accept this position when offered. You go Boy!
The first weekend of October would be Sea Gull Century weekend and the usual extended family of the Krause and Sappington clan would descend on Allen. A great post race meal and Wine a Thon would take place. Always a high lite for us all. We love them all!
October would bring visits to the Eastern Shore of some old and dear friends from the past. Dave and Marie Gibbs would arrive from Fincastle, VA. Dave and I worked together for a number of years with the Connecticut Sate Police. After Dave's retirement he would move his family to Virginia, work in Virginia's crime lab and together with his wife, started a grape vineyard. Today they are the proud owners of Virginia Mountain Vineyards. Check them out at www.vmvines.com
Next to arrive were Fred and Donna Bird from Ellington, CT. Fred was a Sergeant at Troop C in Stafford Springs, CT in years gone by. Fred has his own Photo Studio and can be found at www.fredbirdphotography.com
With both of these old friends we spent a lot of time remembering times gone by. Friedships makes the past special!
The end of the month saw my sister and brother in-law, Donna and John from Connecticut and their good friends Ray and Shirley from Maine arrive for a guided tour of our Nation's Capitol. I would act as Concierge and tour guide. All the usual places were visited and we even took a night tour in the rain to view the night lights of DC. Although there was a lot of rain, it never dampened the spirit of this six some. On the way home we did Annapolis and St. Michaels.
Also during October Granny and Kathryn were runners in the Marine Corps Marathon and 10 K. Granny did the 10 K and Kathryn for the second time, the Marathon.
Another bit of busyness in October saw the Fiddler/Romspert crew go to Annapolis for the Navy - Air Force Football game. What a pleasant surprise when got we got to the meeting place for us all. Out of the house comes C3C Samantha Berthiaume for a surprise visit from Colorado Springs for the weekend. What a Great Day!!!!!
November 6, 2009 would change our lives dramatically. My mother's stay with my sister in Virginia would come to an end. I drove to Sterling, picked up my mother and we said good by to Meg. We were off to Allen and would see what this new chapter in all our lives would bring. Upon entering the house the aroma of one of Mary Agnes' home cooked meals wafted through the air. It was not until after we ate that we learned this delicious meatloaf was venison.
On day 5 of Marie's move into our home I would depart for Sarasota once again. This time with my mother for the closing of her apartment. We were to meet up with my sister Robin and her sons, Ari and Adam in FL. Marie's husband Bill would now be a patient in a Nursing home in Sarasota. We would rent a car for the trip down, Kia Sportage, quite new and a great ride. My mother would ride in the back so to keep her legs up. The better for the circulation you see. We were to return in my mothers 14 year old Volvo.
We made it to Pooler, GA on night one, got separate rooms in a Marriott and departed on the 12'th for Sarasota arriving there at 1515 hrs. Robin arrived at 1600, stated she was hungry and we had to eat. Robin stayed in the apartment with my mother and I had a rental upstairs which I was to share with Ari and Adam on their arrival the next day.
Friday and Saturday were spent packing, Ari and Adam taking a lot North to jersey. Mom and I would load her Volvo for personal items going to my house. The entire move would be an experience. I shall use restraint and not reflect on my thoughtrs of the experience. On our last day there, all, except myself would visit the Professor in the nursing home. After the visit we would go to Chili's for a Last Supper. I must say, Ari and Adam were two great young men to be around. I look forward to seeing them in the future.
On Sunday the 15'th we were off and heading North once again. We would drive to Santee, SC, spend the night and return home to Allen on Monday the 16'th. We arrived around 1800 and Mary Agnes had homemade Chicken Soup awaiting us. I slept quite well that night.
On the 17'th I was up early and out to the Annex for Coffee and Conversation with Mary Agnes. This was to be our habit for the length of my mother's stay. We all need our own space.
Over the next month my mother settled into her room, my former office. My new office was now in the Annex. I spent quite a few days taking my mother to new doctors here in Maryland. GP's, Cardiologists, Gyn's, Dentists, Foot Doctors, lab appointments and the like. Even a few Scans here and there for one thing or another. All necessary stops on the road to transition from Florida.
Our good friends from Connecticut, Bob and Linda Lataille came by for a respit on their way to NC and Thanksgiving with their daughter Dee. They would return on the 28'th for the trip back north for another overnighter.
Our Traditional Thanksgiving meal was at the farm on the creek. Smaller than usual, it was still a great time. The extended Boward family was there and Scott and Connie Moore were by for coffee after. Of course Samantha was home from USAFA also. No one went home hungry. On 11/28 we all went to Sarah's and watched the Yacht Club Boat Parade from her balcony.
December brought preparation for Santa Claus, and numbing cold that is still here today. My mother was not liking the cold at all. I would be busy at the farm, running faucets and making sure pipes didn't freeze. We did the usual holiday concerts at the schools for Rachael, Abby and Tommy.
On 12/22 Mother went to the ER with Mary Agnes, Kathryn and Sarah, Abdominal pain was the issue. After exam and testing she was to return home with no real diagnosis.
Christmas eve saw us at Kathy & Jeff's for the usual gathering. Christmas saw us go to Sarah's and Kathy's to watch all open gifts. All came to our house in the evening for gift giving. My mother seemed to be enduring the event.
On Saturday we all headed to Lewes to Bobby & Barbara's for the Romspert family Christmas party. Since my mother was with us we did not spend the night this year and were home by 2300.
My nephew Ari came down on the 29'th for a visit with us and his grandmother. He spent the night and seemed to enjoy himself. He brought a bottle of Jack Daniels from he and his brother Adam for me. I have yet to crack it open, but when I do I shall enjoy.
New Years Eve was quiet, Mary Agnes made a great Potato Soup. We went next door and had a beer or two with John and Grace and were in bed before 2200. We must be getting old.
OK my friends and acquaintances, 2009 has come to an end. I shall catch up with January and February in the near future. The times they are a changing. The storms they are a coming. For now I go to the TV and UCONN Basketball. Good day to all.
