Good evening who ever might be out there. Have to make a correction to day one's Blog, the starting mileage was 35787 from Uncle Bobbie's. I reported 35747, that was when I got gas in 21801. I've made the change, Starting mile were 35787.
At the present we are settled in the Holiday Inn Express in Lamar, CO. Today we went through Hutchinson, Dodge City, Garden City and several others. All our travel today was on route 50. For the sake of those of you who are mileage guessing, our trip yesterday to Emporia, KS was mostly down routes 4 & 75 to 50. Like I mentioned previously, you have until midnight tomorrow to get your totals in.
Today was miles and miles of nothingness, punctuated only by Flatulence on Uncle Bobbies part. We stopped at numerous Historical Markers and became aware of their significance.
I have to go back to yesterday and the Sister Mary Deloris act alike. This woman obviously came from Germany where her father was some type of Storm Trooper. Her Vows were to be nasty, certainly not charitable. The Benedictines, known for their
As we approached the grave of all the Nuns who had passed away, Uncle Bobbies only regret was that we did not stop and pick up black and white paint. The markers, all in a row, if painted, could have been true marching Penguins.
Tomorrows departure will be delayed a bit for the repair of a flat tire in the parking lot. The front desk called a bit ago to make us aware of the fact.

Day 3, Looking for Dorothy in Kansas
Just got back from having nice Kansas City Beef at "Bruffs", did Texas Toothpicks (Onions and Peppers) for the Appetizer. Had a real nice unfiltered wheat beer from Kansas City. The Beef was a great Rib Eye. Bobby had the KC Sirloin.
After breakfast we headed out towards Atchison, KS. We were off to the Mount and the burial place of Sister Agnes OSB.
The ride turned into a bit of an adventure. We started out in rolling hills with some beautiful fa off vistas. We went through old towns being brought back to life and the usual no traffic roads. As we entered the flat lands again we were following the path of Lewes and Clark, the road we were on for many many miles was in the flood plain of the Missouri River. At one point we exited the main road and went onto a road of Crusher Run that weaved very close to the river. They were replacing a bridge on Rt.4. thus the detour. For 6.5 miles we made a great half circle through one continuous Soy Bean field planted in the Flood Plain. Back in June of this year the Flood Plain experienced quit a bit of flooding. It was a real interesting ride up to Kansas City and on to Atchison.
We got into Atchison at 1300 and found Paolucci's Restaurant, the special was Chicken Pot Pie over biscuits which we both had. It was very rewarding. After lunch we headed up the hill, took a few pictures of the birthplace of Amelia Earhart and the on to Benedictine College.. Took more photos at the school but you'll have to wait, the camera is in the car.
After the school we went to Mt St. Scholastica and got direction's to the cemetery and the burial place of Sister Agnes. The sister was Bobby and Mary Agnes' Aunt. We found the grave, paid our respects and moved on.
It was now time to move on, south and west through Topeka, cattle and grain farms and finally stopping here in Emporia for the night. We're settled in noe, off to Dodge City tomorrow and who knows where we spend the night. I forgot to check the mileage so it's all guess work people. For this lack of detail on my part I'll extend the guessing game another day to Wednesday at 2359 hrs.

Day two, the road west.
The river is the Missouri, the Casino is on the Mississippi, everything else is pretty much self explanatory. Will add more as we go.
Until later this afternoon we hadn't seen a cloud in two days. Temps both days have been in the low 90's. We're looking at 93 minimum in Kansas City tomorrow. We're also keeping an eye on whats going on in the Atlantic. We both have boat in the water.
Well it's 1930 hrs., we're in for the night and the total two day mileage is 1067 miles. It was another day with no traffic. Stay off the Interstates people, no traffic or especially Truck traffic on Rt. 50 heading west.
We were going around Cincinnati at 0830, into Kentucky and then Indiana. Just rolling countryside all the way. Tiny little towns, huge farms and Soy Bean, Corn and Sorghum as far as the eye could see. North Vernon, Seymour, Loogootee were some of the towns that we passed through and made a stop in. Loogootee is not far from Crane, which just happens to be the home of the Navy's Surface Warfare Center. Which of our great Senators got that contract won over?
Shortly after noon we crossed into Illinois and scenery did not change. Just more of the same, farm after farm and small towns and no traffic. We ate lunch in Olney, IL under the shade of tree behind a Golden Arch on property owned by the Catholic Church. After lunch we trudged on with St. Louis in our sights.
WE went off the beaten path for a short ride to Carlyle Reservoir. There must have been a hundred boats on the lake. Just a beautiful spot. Glad we made the stop.
About 1630 we were in sight of the Gateway Arch and St Louis. Quite impressive driving into the city. The mighty Mississippi, Edward Jones Dome, floating gambling casino and something we've never seen befor.
We continued west to the Town of Washington, MO where I'm propped up on pillows writing this. We had a nice dinner downtown along the Missouri River, did you know it's the longest river in the US of A?
So now it's time to pack it in for the night. Tomorrow it's off to Atchison and the former home of Sister Agnes OSB. Only 268 miles to our next stop. We just might have some Steak or Ribs in KC also. Who would have THUNK IT?

Day One, On the road
Never thought we'd pull in 41 miles east of Cincinnati after 614 miles. Just finished eating dinner at Butter Bees Sports Bar. Chicken Enchilada for me, Wings for Uncle Bob.
Got off from Lewes, DE at 0755,Milage was 35787 miles, made a quick stop for Coffee and headed west. Di 50 - 97 - 32 - 70 - 68 then back to 50 in Clarksburg, WV. Did 50 - 124 - got screwed up in some construction, drove along the Ohio river for awhile and right through a Power Plant in Chishire, OH. Saw a Tug pushing 6 barges of coal down the Ohio.
We spent several hours riding through Quilt and Amish country and passed by a total of 3 gas stations in 2 1/2 hours. No traffic what so ever, we thought maybe something Nuclear and we were unaware. Was really weird.
Have more pictures on camera in the car and will upload along the way. Right now people, I'm bushed. Don't forget the game, 3 days to get your finish line mileage guess. email or use comments section for blog. Thanks for your guess Cheryl, it's been noted.

One Day to Lift Off
A friend sent me the following obituary, I thought a moment of silence for a former Navy Man was in order. I'm sure Bob would have said, "Go Navy beat Army".

Robert W. Snyder, Jr. 1947 ~ 2010 Bob left us on June 19th after a day of doing what he loved, sailing the BJ at Soldier Creek with good friends and family. Bob was born September 2, 1947, at Mitchel Field AFB, in New York, the only son of Charlotte and Robert Snyder. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he married Connie and they began their life together in Denver. After a few years in Denver, the couple moved to Minneapolis where their son Michael was born in 1970. After a brief stay living in San Francisco they finally made their home in Utah where they raised their son and enjoyed many friends and family. Bob is survived by his wife, Connie, son, Mike (Wendy), granddaughter, Bailey, and sisters, Jean Allstun and Carol (Gary) Davis. Bob lived his life to the fullest and always found a way to have a good time. He had a way of making friends with everyone he met and will be missed by all who knew him. Services will be held Thursday, June 24, 2010 - 11:00 a.m. at Camp Williams, 17111 S. Camp Williams Road (Redwood Rd), Bluffdale, Utah. Family and close friends are welcome from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Bob's humorous outlook on life, please feel free to make contributions to whoever may be running against Obama in 2012.
So, I'm packing the bags and loading the car and tying up loose ends before I travel afar. I must tell you the novel way Uncle Bob and I are recycling T Shirts and drawers. All those needing replacement will be disposed of each day one by one as we head west. It will get rid of the old and make our bags lite for when we get on big bird in Denver for the return trip.
Kathryn has packed us a goody bag with gum, jerky, pretzel bites and mint candies. Gotta love that girl. Jeff's home for a few days and gassed up the car for us. And one more little tid bit from that household, Abby, after a summer of procrastination has finished reading the "Odyssey".
This morning Mary Agnes & I were at a prayer breakfast honoring the Boy Scouts and their 100'th anniversary. We were the guests of Mike Wessels and Met Life. Also at our table was Mom Mom as my grandson calls her and the grandson and scout, Tommy. Tommy recently completed a week at Camp Rodney Scout Reservation in Northeast, MD on the Chesapeake Bay. This past year Tommy and I did a lot of scouting things together, but the camping was not one I chose to share with him. I Like my bed!
The guest speaker at the breakfast was Barry C. Black, Chaplain, United States Senate. Take a moment and read his Biography. He has also written a book, "From the Hood to the Hill" . The man is a true motivational speaker. He had a book signing after the event. I bought a book and you'll never guess how he signed it?

One other side note, Andy is safely back in Bavaria and united with his new Audi.

Das Boot Sinkt
Standing on the stern of this vessel is my former employer and good friend, Hubertus Rechberg of Eschenloe, Germany. The photo was taken yesterday inside The boat house at Hubert's farm on Wicomico Creek, MD. If you can notice, the interior is a reflective pool.
The boat is named a Volga. Volga is a small hydrofoil vessel. Around 6,800 boats have been built. Full-load displacement 1.9-2.6 tons, speed 29-33.5 knots, passengers 6, range 97-160 n.m
AT 0900 yesterday the phone rang with a female voice saying, "Lee, the boat has sunk in the boat house. I gathered up our family friend and adopted brother to my daughter Kathy, Andy Linz, from Weilheim, Germany and we met at the farm. God bless Andy, ever the respondant. We borrowed several chains from a local farmer and pulled the boat to the front of the boat house. We then went to a local Crane Co., gotta give him a plug, Houston Crane G.L. the owner fixed us up with two straps to hook on to the 4 mechanical hoists in the ceiling of the boat house. Andy and Hubert, after several hours of hard work were able to hoist the boat and begin the process of draining it.
Once Billy the boat man gets to the farm the situation will be evaluated and perhaps the boat will motor once again. My guess is not this year. We Shall see.
I must tell you this was not the first sinking of Das Boot. No, it's gone down previously. On that occasion the local Fire Brigade as Hubert calls them, responded. To give them credit, The Allen Volunteer Fire Company, aka, Station #15.
I have been affiliated with the farm for fifteen years, and each year when the owner and his family arrive it has always been an adventure. I'm trying to think if it could be a mini series who would play Hubert's part. Our guess is Walter Matthau. At some point down the line I'll embellish on the happenings at Rechberg Farm mthrough the years and try to paint the characters for you.
Andy returned home to Germany this afternoon after sharing himself with all of us for a month. A wonderful young man who my family has come to love as their own. We are hoping he returns to spend Christmas with us. Andy lost his mother this past March and misses her very much. As an adopted family, we grieve in his loss with him.
Now the process of packing for the trip two days away begins. I must spend a few minutes with our long time friends Bob & Linda Lataille. They stopped by last week on their way south to Wilmington, NC to see one of their daughters and are here again on the return. I'm preparing the charcoal, have basted the Pork Chops and await our daughter Sarah's arrival to begin the cooking process.

Who is Brian Lataille ?
Last night about 1930 hrs Kathy got a call from Brian. Brian, with great pride and humility let his friend of 35 years share in the news of his winning an Emmy. Brian "You Rock" to quote Kathy.
Brian grew up as a friend and neighbor with us back in Connecticut during the 70's and 80's. Our son Matt and Brian made War Movies in the woods near our homes when they were in their early teens. Matt the War hero wore the fatigues and played the role, Brian, straight out of Hollywood with his ancient video recorder was the cameraman.

Brian became active in Manchester Connecticut's Little Theatre and other production venues during high school and after graduation.

Brian Lataille grew up in Vernon, Connecticut, and like everyone in the field of movie making, dreamed of one day working in the motion picture business. Brian completed his schooling and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Cinematography and immediately began working in his field of choice. For the next few years Brian worked on many TV features including Monk, Girl Friends, The Game, and The Secret Life of an American Teenager. Modestly selling himself as a jack-of-all-trades, Brian was able to bring a visual acumen to productions that only a handful of operators were able to achieve. Brian was able to give filmmakers with a modest budget, some of the big budget shots that are often lacking in those types of productions. His work includes Ghost Rock, Angel Air, and Lethal, along with a series of national TV ads. His feature films include films like Killing Cupid, Alien Invasion Arizona, Dual: The Lone Drifter, and most recently Easy Rider: The Ride Back. In the field of cinematography Brian admires and respects some of the greats including, Bernie Abramson, Donald A. Morgan, Affonso Beato, Cèsar Charlone, Dean Cundy, Lazlo Kovacs, Vilmos Zsigmond, Jack N. Green, Russell Carpenter, and Tom Stern. Lataille currently resides in Burbank, California and is currently attached to oversee the cinematography on two projects in the fall of 2009.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) today awarded the 2009-2010 Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards for programs and individual achievements at the 62nd Emmy Awards presentation at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. HBO's epic $100 million-plus miniseries The Pacific earned the most Emmys at Saturday's technical category ceremony for its casting, sound mixing, sound editing, makeup, art direction and visual effects. The freshman ABC comedy Modern Family paced series for its casting, sound mixing and editing. HBO led with a total 17 awards and its miniseries The Pacific led all programs with 7 awards. Four days to departure
This is the patch for Sam's Squadron, Squadron 29 at USAFA. There are 40 Squadrons in all at the Academy. Patches, Ranks etc. can be found at. Now if your really interested in this kind of stuff you can triple your pleasure by researching the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy. Just always remember one thing " Go Navy beat Army"Just so I'm not looked at as being prejudiced towards the larger Academies we also have the United States Coast Guard Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
So, here we have the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine schools. You may think I'm slighting the Best of the Lot, The United States Marine Corps, but I'm not. For you see, they have their own college,Marine Corps University (MCU). So if your going to check out the others, check out them also. Just one more little unknown fact that's out there, Now that you have all the resources for all the Academies there will be a test on the sixth Friday of the month for all who follow this blog.
Now I'm sure there are those of you who are wondering what all this Military, Academy, Squadron stuff has to do with a trip west by two old men to deliver a car. Well, that IS what it's all about. And if you have no love for the Military, our nations youth and why their getting this education, you just don't get it Pilgrim!
My granddaughter a junior at USAFA, along with several thousand juniors at all the other Academies recently made a choice of accepting a seven (7) year obligation to:

Five days to go
I started this on 08-22-10 but am finishing it on 08-23-10 thus the date confusion. Happy Monday!
I just finished computing the miles, a close proximity any way. With a diversion north in Kansas from Kansas City to Atchison, I got 1939 miles. I'm sure it will be a few hundred extra with trips to restaurants and side trips here and there. About two thirds of the way to Sacramento it is.
So lets add some gamesmenship (don't know if that's a word or not) to the trip. We shall of course mark down our beginning miles when I pull out of Uncle Bob's driveway in Lewes, DE. When we reach our hotel destination in Colorado Springs, hopefully on 09-02-10, we shall again check the mileage. The hotel is in the south of Colorado Springs on Geyser Drive.
So here's what to do. Between today August 23'rd 2010 and day 4 of the trip (08-31-10)at 2359 hrs., send an email to elfidd@gmail.com with your mileage guess. You will be able to keep track of us each day through my Blog and know where we've been and our route. Hey, maybe you'll even learn a little Geography. Please include your full name and mailing address in the email, include T shirt size also. Even if we don't know you, you can still play, please include a little something of who you are since we're sharing so much of ourselves with everyone out there.
The winning mileage estimate participant will recieve a Squadron 29, Black Panther T shirt from USAFA. Uncle Bob and I shall be the judges for the trip mileage. I shall attempt to get a photo of the Odometer on departure and arrival at our destination.
So, only five days to go until we cast off the lines of the land yacht and head west. Stick with us and follow the exploits of, still thinking of what to call us. Tom Mix & Hopalong Cassidy? Problem: You want to turn a certain bit of text into a link to another web page.

Six days and counting
Ok, here it is Sunday, just got back from Sam's old home, beautiful downtown Allen, MD after having Coffee from Abby's new Keurig Coffee Maker. No other way to drink coffee, try it sometime. Personally I'm into the Kona Dark. Kathy, Jeff and Andy (German visitor)were up. Abby had left word she was sleeping in until noon.
Here is the destination for our adventure. This was the view out Sam's dorm room last year.
So you'll know the mode of transportation for Bobby and I, the Saturn Vue is pictured.
Tonight Kathy is hosting a Crab feast for our friends from Bavaria. They are the Rechberg family and for the past 14 years we have been in their employ one way or another taking care of their gorgeous property on Wicomico Creek. Must get some pictures up. For those of you familiar with the property you know the setting.
Hubertus has a company ( Valley Electronics) and is soon to expand the operation to the USA. Hubertus and family are from Eschenloe in Bavaria.
Andy (Andreas Linz), who I referred to as having coffee with, is from Weilheim, Germany and has his own tile business. This is the fourth summer he has spent his holiday with us. for the past few years he has stayed with Mary Agnes and I. This year he is blessed with the hospitality of Kathy and Jeff.
So, a little more info for those of you who are out there. Jeff is back from Pakistan and this afternoon leaves for some schooling in GA, USA.
Nothing more today, shall move the fingers again tomorrow, have a great day all.

Trip Planning
OK out there here we come. It is one week until Robert & William start their Western Adventure. The planning has taken place for the past month and an official get together took place between the participants and their respective spouses yesterday here in Allen.
We are transporting C2C Berthiaume's newly purchased 2006 Saturn Vue out to USAFA in 80841. She got a great deal on a fine vehicle through her Uncle Pete. God bless Uncle Pete as he had to deal with Grandfather, Father, Mother and the Cadet over several weeks and waits to complete the deal. Thanks Uncle Pete for your patience and looking out for Sam who was so far away.
For those of you who don't know, Robert, aka Uncle Bobby is Mary Agnes's brother. And me, aka Uncle Lee am Mary Agnes' husband and Sams maternal grandfather.
So the stage is set, we're off a week from today and heading west on old Rt 50. The sun shall be to our backs as we head west each day and in our eyes as we call it a day. We know not where we will stop, other than Atchison, KS for sure. Bobby's Aunt Peggy, aka Sister Agnes O.S.B. was a long time resident in Atchison @ Mt. St. Scholastica We shall also look at least twice a day for any Drive INN, Diner or Dive that has some great food to sample.
We hope to reach USAFA by Thursday 09-02, catch a Parade on 09-03, a football game on 09-04 and catch a plane back east on 09-05. It has the makings of a great trip for two old men without a Bucket List, but hopefully filling a bucket with a lot of great memories and a few stories to tell along the way.

More months pass.
So, my Mother has returned to Florida as of 02-18-10, too damn cold up here in the north.
Spring brought rain to a drought stricken Eastern Shore after a winter of more snow than we had seen in years. Unfortunately the summer has once again dried up the area and once again we are in need of rain.
Everyone's health is well and for that we are thankful.
Rachael graduated from High School in May and will be attending Salisbury University in the fall. Tommy moves on to middle school this fall as he goes into the sixth grade. Sarah still sells food at the beach for US Foods and is doing well as a single parent.
Samantha got home for a brief visit during the summer, you can check her out @ thelongeblueline.blogspot.com Abby will be ninth grader in HS this year. She played softball all summer and will be in band this fall, marching on the football field. Kathy still doing Cardiology research nursing and Air Force Majoring as a Reserve. Jeff is busy flitting around the world for the State Department. AS of this writing he's in route to Karachi, Pakistan.
Matt and family in CT are all fine. The kids grow from Kindergarten to a HS Sophomore. Most recently David, Kevin and Jill were in the play Music Man in Tolland. Matt and Beth are well and make a great tag team as parents.
Mary Agnes made the trip to CT for the play. I remained at home to take Tommy to the north of the bay for a week at Camp Rodney for Boy Scout camp.
In May we got a new batch of 26 baby chickens, all hens. We've given a few away, one went to Chicken Heaven and 19 are left. We should start getting eggs around the first of October. Mary Agnes is still with The State part time and I'm a house husband. Maggie, our standard Poodle, 2 yrs. old this past June is just a delight.
So now everything is pretty much up to date. I do want to mention that Andal Linz, our longtime friend from Germany is here for a month. We call him Andie from Bavaria. At the end of the month Andie, Uncle Bob and are taking a road trip out west. Samantha has purchased a car through Uncle Pete (God Bless him). The three of us shall be driving it out to USAFA with a bucket list of stops on the way. We'll be looking for Diners-Drive Ins and Dives along the way. Going to try and use Rt. 50 most of the way.
I shall hope to post to the Blog each day and give everyone an update on the trip. Should be fun, Stay Tuned. See you all shortly.
